Running Journal 4/22/2010 (5.5 miles)

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Today's stats:

Sunny 70 degrees w/ calm wind

Time 1:05:18 (4/1 intervals)
11:52 av pace
5.1 av MPH
538 cals burned

148 av bpm HR
174 max bpm HR

M1: 11:39 (153 bpm)
M2: 11:56 (146 bpm)
M3: 11:50 (149 bpm)
M4: 11:39 (150 bpm)
M5: 12:04 (144 bpm)
M6: 12:21 (146 bpm)

Crap! My legs were heavy in the first part of the run and I think it is because I still had alot of lactic acid in my leg muscles from my deep tissure massage last night. I did feel better further into the run though. I am also noticing that my HR is gradually going down with each run and I think tha tis a good thing. I am also very happy with the consistency of my pacing during my runs. That is coming naturally as I don't really think about it as I run.

I have also decided on a Half marathon training plan and that is the program my local running store (Running Wild) and running club puts on in conjunction with the Quad Cities Marathon September 27. Laurel, my LMT, told me about it last night and explained it to me and I am sold. I am enjoying my group run on Tuesday and this will be a great learning experience. It starts June 6 and I am excited! As I mentioned before, I am so happy with where my running is right now and hope and pray I stay healthy.

Week running totals:
Sunday - 8.5 miles
Tuesday- 5.16 miles
Thursday- 5.5 miles
Total - 19.16 miles

I am glad that there are other "expert" runners to give you such good advice. A. I learn a lot from their remarks to you. and B. That leaves me to sit back and enjoy being your #1 emoticon

Your math isn't adding up, because your schedule seems to be moving around. Looking at a rolling 7 day summary, here's what I see:

    Ending 4/22: 23.89 miles (4 runs)
    Ending 4/15: 17.27 miles (4 runs)
    Ending 4/8: 11 miles (2 runs)
    Ending 4/1: 12.9 miles (3 runs including a 5K race.

Looking at that, unless there are runs missing from you blog, I'm not surprised your legs were heavy today. 24 miles is a huge week for you.

Your body doesn't care whether you are calculating weeks starting on Sunday or Friday. It cares what you did to it in the last 7 days. This is why when I ran alternating days, I always split my long run distance into two short runs instead of running a heavier 4 day schedule than the 3 day schedule.

My suggestion is to plan a rather significant cutback week next week. Your legs are telling you something.

Great job! A decreasing average heart rate is always a good sign, not to mention that it makes the run easier! I am glad that you have found a group to train with. I think it makes all the difference in the world. Will you be able to continue with run/walk with this group?

Heavy legs at the beginning of the run are often a sign that they haven't fully recovered from their last exertion. Switching down to a lower interval can help when they start the run already a little tired.
