First 5k - done!

First 5k was good! HARD - hottest I've run in so far and no shade. Love the smell of asphalt while you're trying to suck in a breath. Gotta love NC heat and humidity. One dude was puking after a mile! Felt so bad for him - I felt like being right there too. But I did it and it was right between 37.30 and 38, I forgot to look so caught a glance as I was almost by it then didn't think to shut the timer I use on my phone app right away. Ran all but about .2 of it in the middle. I'll take it, especially since I have signed up for two others in the past and chickened out both times.
I had these visions of being the last straggler through as they were cleaning up to leave, and totally was nowhere close :) One crazy guy ran the whole thing in 16.18!! Amazing!
Loved having hubby and the little one out there. She was such a trooper with all that boring sitting around beforehand then waiting for slow mommy in that heat. She told Daddy she thought Mom was lost. LOL! The teens were bored with the idea of coming to watch, but they just don't get it. It's such a huge accomplishment for me. It's just really hard to describe. I've always been the type to get so close to my goals then give up before reaching them. And I was never an athlete, never did sports - I was a bookworm and farm-girl growing up. So just that I have been running steadily for 7 weeks, then did a race at all...I shocked myself. I never thought the geeky, bookworm could ever do anything physical - and enjoy it so much.
I'm still struggling to explain it, but I know some of you guys understand :)
