Flying Pig Half Marathon Race Report

Monday, May 03, 2010

Did anyone catch the weather report for Ohio yesterday? Well, it was wet. Really wet. Like monsoon wet. Scary wet. We ran the Flying Pig in the rain. It rained before it started, while we were at the starting line, while we were running, while we were cheering for other people, while I was driving home, while I was in the shower, while we were at our celebration party. Get the picture???

My shoes are still wet. My iPod doesn't work any more. One of my friends told me to put it in a bowl of rice to get it dried out, so it's sitting in a bowl of rice right now. Hopefully that will do it!

But anyway, the race was a lot of fun. Nope, I didn't PR - I was 12 minutes off of my half PR, but I'm truly OK with it. I finished a half marathon on the 6 month anniversary of my hip surgery. 6 months isn't a whole lot of time, when you think about it. So, I am OK with it. And, judging by how my right leg/hip feels right now, it's still weaker than the other one.

Now I can focus on my next goal: running a marathon in under 5 hours (Oct. 17 in Columbus). That wouldn't be a PR, but it would be a major improvement over the last marathon I ran - Pig 2009. I have several races in between - Hyde Park Blast 4 miler, Chicago Rock'n' Roll half marathon, and maybe the Air Force half marathon too. Not to mention all the charity 5K's I am going to run...

I am proud of myself and how far I've come in the past 6 months, though. I am still not a fast runner, but my speed is getting better with every week. For the past few I have been tapering, so I have laid off the XT. But now I'm going to bring it back 100%, starting with today.

Molly, I am catching this late, but congratulations! Sounds like you had a very triumphant return to racing!

PS - did the rice trick work? Because I got caught in rain on Sunday and now my mp3 player is on the fritz!

Great job on the half! That's awesome to have run a strong and smart race so soon after hip surgery!

(I did my very first HM this last April at 9 weeks pregnant on a very hilly course. That was my way of hopefully ensuring that the next HM I run I can PR. . . . we'll see!)

I want to break the 5 hr marathon as well. (Also not a PR but the last 2 marathons have been over. 1 from my own injuries/stupidity from pushing too fast in the beginning. The 2nd running hubby-pace at 5 weeks pregnant.)

Keep up the great work! I'll be checking back enviously (since I think my marathoning is on hiatus for now).

Awesome job! We went down to the Cap City Half and cheered on Sparkers and friends down there - you have come a long way and you should be very proud of yourself - you are a huge inspiration!

Some of the Penguins are going to run the Chicago half! I am going to be there, too. Let me know when the time gets closer- maybe we can meet up?!
Congrats on finishing a hard race- better race conditions will get you a PR- no doubt!
I'm really proud of how far you've come in these last 6 months Molly-- you are a true inspiration to me.

Awesome!! I was there, too, and it WAS wet!! With the lightning all around just before the start, I wondered if they would cancel it. So glad the lightning stopped! Really, just 6 months out of hip surgery, running a Half Marathon is great -- you're awesome!!
