Ran like the Wind...if the wind needed to drop 40lbs

Monday, May 24, 2010

This morning there was again the great debate as to what to do with myself until I had to wake my son. It was 5:30am and he likes to get up and watch some Phineus and Ferb on the DVR at 6:30.

I could turn on the computer and not accomplish anything...the usual. I could go to the gym that is a whole 2 minute drive away. I could start that Couch to 5k I keep telling myself I'm going to try again...

...then it turned 6:00am. I burned a half hour with the computer on while trying to figure out what to do (not realizing the computer thing was winning).

Yesterday I got a new battery for my Heart Rate Monitor. That is the excuse I have been giving for not doing the C25K. I finally decided to drag myself out and do this.

My first thoughts as my shins seemed they were going to snap was that I can tell I'm heavier since when I tried it last fall. I wasn't winded at all, that was great. It was all pain in my feet, shins, and back. It will get better, I'm sure of that, it won't scare me away. Now it's just about making this a habit. The ball is rolling.

If you're dealing with shin splints, make sure you're giving them a good stretch before and after your run. Sit on the ground with your legs straight out. Flex your feet (you should feel the stretch in your calves) for ten seconds; then point your toes (you should feel the stretch in your shins) for ten seconds. Do that ten times. Works wonders!
