Heart Rate Monitoring

Monday, May 31, 2010

I decided to try something different at the gym today (I usually stick to the elliptical) and ended up on the "Summit Trainer" which is a cross between an elliptical and a stair climber. Wow... I need to mix it up more often! Halfway through, there was sweat pouring down my face and I don't often break much of a sweat on the elliptical anymore... even at full speed. Sometimes I wonder why those machines even bother with the heart rate sensors on the handles. One minute, it reads 160 and then abruptly drops down to 80 just seconds later. Because of this and now that I've also started cycling outside of the gym, I decided to finally order a heart rate monitor. If I'm going to keep track of the calories that I'm eating, I really need a more accurate count of how many calories I'm burning, too.

emoticonHave you guys had good or bad experiences with heart rate monitors?

I've had a HRM for about a decade. Polar models are great, and I'd recommend them as the best option. But there's one from Pro-form that is a lot more inexpensive that I'd recommend if you don't need a waterproof unit and don't expect to ever need to use it near others also using HRMs (because its transmission is not "coded"). Polar has several different chest straps that have various pros and cons, and not all of their unit are coded either so keep that in mind when selecting one.

And the one thing I can definitely say is to not even consider a unit without a chest strap. Units without a chest strap only read when you put your finger on the electrode on its face so they have to guess at the times in between. It might be a reasonable solution for a very steady-state exercise but is epic fail for any interval or circuit training.

I have one made by POLAR. I really like it. The one I have has the chest strap. Good luck on your search for the one that best suites you. :)

I got a Sportline Duo 1060 a couple weeks ago - and I ABSOLUTELY love it. I should've gotten it months ago. I wouldn't think of working out without it now.
