Motivating My Kids Motivates Me
Thursday, June 17, 2010
As I watch my kids grow, I see them wanting to get away from physical activity more and more. They are much more content to watch tv, play games, read, or any other number of sedentary activities. Even though we limit their time in front of the tv and their video game time, I still worry that they would rather be sedentary.
When we were kids, we were outside first thing in the morning and often didn't come indoors to do more than eat meals--as fast as we could so we could get back outside. We ran around with friends, went swimming, played kickball in the yard, and did any number of physical activities. But my kids would rather sit in the house all day. And I do mean sit!
It makes me wonder what's changed since we were kids. And why it's changed. It also tells me I need to motivate my kids--with words as well as by setting a good example. If I won't get out and get moving, why should I expect them to do that? When I read about one person motivating others to exercise in The Spark, it made me realize just how important my healthy lifestyle journey is, and that it is not just important for me but for them as well. Kind of gives a whole new reason (or in my case three reasons) to keep going on this journey. It also helps me in that I can tell my kids I am not asking them to do something that I will not willingly do myself.
Thanks for reading! Have an awesome day!!
