Calories and Eating Out and Perkins

Saturday, July 03, 2010

My husband suggested Perkins for eating out tonight. We go out about once a week and that is where we chose. I went to their website after we got back home and nearly fainted when I saw how many calories was in my hamburger. Yes, I know a cheese bacon burger (900 calories) is high calorie, but I did not think it was that high. I also did not think it would be that big. And no, I did not quite eat it all. My son ordered the Tangler burger (1,000 calories), a hamburger with cheese, bacon and onion ring things on it. He wanted fries with it and I said no. He got the fruit cup. I got the side salad. My husband ordered the spinach chicken salad. (800 calories without the bread thing on the side.)

After I looked at what we each ate and fainted, then I looked at some other items. I would have been better off with the steak meal like I used to get, before I was counting calories. I was just in a mood for a burger. Should have ordered the normal burger which I don't remember even seeing on the menu. Even the kids meal burger is 600 calories with no fries. The ham and cheese egg omelet with hash browns said 1,000 calories, if I remember right. How does someone trying to watch their calories go to Perkins? Can you find anything that you would enjoy that would be 400 to 600 calories with some kind of side?

Oh, and yes, I emailed them and thanked them for having the nutrition information available and asked if they have anything for someone wanting a 600 calorie dinner or can an adult order from the kids menu or the senior menu?

A great site for checking out the menu and healthy eating in your area is www.healthydiningfinder.com. Just put in your zip code and they list healthy choices at the restaurants in your area.

I've had the same problem with Perkins. I used to get a salad but than found out it was over 1000 calories. Talk about a bummer. I think the wraps are fairly low. If they respond, I would be interested in knowing what they say.

Isnt' this the truth..... I, sometimes, rarely actually, look up the restaurant before I go and pick what I am going to order. I will have to remember to do this.....before ordering whatever sounds appealing at the moment. Thanks for the reminder!!!

Thank you so much for posting this and reminding me to check what I am eating. This is a trap we all fall into SO EASILY especially when led by our cravings.

    THANK YOU!

Thanks for the reminder to check BEFORE eating out. I got a Dairy Queen Blizzard as a treat and knew it would be high, but like you I just about fainted. The medium was over 800 calories, and large was 1,000. Small is 600. We opted for the medium being proud of ourselves we didn't choose large (it was a buy one get one free).

Thanks, for the reminder, we can check out the nutritional value of a restaurant on line, we can actually, check the menu, the nutritional value, and plan our meal, at home, before we go. Wow, thanks for the wonderful hint.

This seems to be the case with MANY restaurants. Even when you think you're choosing a healthy dish, they can end up being way up there in calories. I try to check out the menus before I go, so there's no nasty surprises! (Plus I always seem to be the last one to order, so this speeds things up a bit - lol)

I had that ham and cheese omlette last week. Like you I was apalled when I got home and checked the calories. Half would have been plenty. Next time I'll bring half home for another meal.

Wow! 900 calories in a hamburger. Amazing how many calories can be in something like that.

It's kind of scary how many calories I used to put away mindlessly at restaurants. Now I usually save half my entrée to take home for lunch the next day.
