I have become pretty good at putting on my walking shoes and hitting the track on a regular basis, but recently I surprised myself with a sudden urge to RUN! There I was walking along at a nice, brisk pace and I felt like running. So I did ... for about 30 seconds. emoticon It never dawned on me that it might actually be physically difficult for me to just pick up my feet and run. I am 5'3" and currently 194 lbs, so it stands to reason that running might put a little stress on my knees and ankles! I was so disappointed. I just wanted to run ...

So I am looking for pointers - and not just from hard-core lifetime runners. I need tips from the "average Joe". People who never ran, but decided to start. What do I need to do to start out right? I would assume a good pair of shoes is essential, along with starting slowly and easing into it - little by little, and stretching beforehand ... but what other words of wisdom can you share with me so that I might someday be able to run? Your thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated!!! Spark on!

    There is a team out there called something along the lines of Running while chunky or something. Another of my friends in it. She's an average joe runner and has blogged about running races even while still in the 200s. I'll check her blogs tomorrow or ask her (KARVY is her part of her id, not sure if there are any numbers or something with it.) She's often got popular blog posts.

    i don't even consider myself an 'average joe'when it comes to running, since i've been a walker all this time but recently i've had that itch to run too and started jogging for 90 seconds at a time. there are running programs on spark but i've chosen to go at my own pace and listen to my body. although i've had a setback with my left hip...that's not stopping me. i'm just taking things slowly and making sure to stretch, especially my hip flexors. all the best girlfriend. we can do this!

    emoticon for you! I did C25K, but found I like the Jeff Galloway method better for me (there is a team her on SP-it's listed on my page). I was someone who hasn't run since the mile in middle school, LOL and HATED exercise. I started walking and little by little decided I wanted to run. My local spark team has a lot of runners and they encouraged and helped me and it was great! We all did a 5K together in June and we're doing 2 in October.

    For me, the best thing to do was to start out slow and build my way up.

    BTW, one of the gals on my team started out with short runs also and worked her way up, but always dreamed of a marathon. She recently completed her 1st marathon at over 200 pounds. Her blog was SO inspirational for me to read.

    I almost forgot--yes, good shoes are a must! I got fitted at a local running store. They watched me run and saw my particular patterns and then suggested shoes just for my type of running and my feet. Also, everyone is different but what you eat beforehand and hydration are very important, even on shorter runs. There is a wealth of info on SP from getting started to running long distances.

    Definitely get good shoes!!! You don't need to spend a lot of money but just get actual running shoes. Stretch a little beforehand and longer after. I generally hold my stretches for 45-60 seconds. Don't sell yourself short, don't think you can't do it. When you think you need to stop, push it a little further and you will be surprised at what you can do. Good luck!!!!

    I did the couch to 5k programme at a starting weight of around 220lbs. I'd never ran before. I completed the programme and ran a 5k.

    Seconding the recommendation for Couch to 5K. Very good program. Cool Running has a good site here

    BR>There are also podcasts that you can listen to while running (if you're like me and too technologically inept to make your own playlists right away). They let you know when to switch from walking to running and vice versa. DJ Steveboy (PodRunner Intervals) and Robert Ullrey both make good ones.

    It's a Couch-to-5K program that GRADUALLY eases you into running if you are NOT a runner.

    My daughter and I did it last year, and it's really fun to challenge yourself, knowing you are not working beyond your level. Good luck & have fun!

    It isn't easy for anyone to just pick up and run - you do have to ease into it - walk run intervals are easy, and be sure you don't try to run too fast to start. There is a wealth of information on this site from runners, and I know you will get what you need.
