My Recent Sodium Intake...

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

I'm loving the sodium trend for the last week. Most of the time I run between 1000-1500 mg of sodium daily. Occasionally, I have a high day, but usually that does not go over my max of 2300. Last week was a great example. I had one high day. And then of my average days, only one was on the high end of my average. The rest were all around 1000 mg. Woo Hoo! Loving it!

I expect I'll have another high day on Saturday...church picnic. That might even be over the 2300. Oh well, every once in a while we gotta let loose!

This sodium challenge was actually quite easy for me, because I had been tracking my sodium for some time. In the beginning, my doctor thought I had high BP. I think I was borderline at the time, but my BP is no longer an issue. When I first started tracking sodium, it was a real eye opener about just how much was in everything. There are things I stay away from now because of the sodium levels. I continue in my lower sodium habit, because, now that I know better, I don't want to put that junk in my body!!

Boy, I've never tracked my sodium before, and that challenge sure was a great exercise! I didn't realize how much extra I was eating on some days. The cottage cheese was an eye opener for me as well. I am going to keep on tracking for now.

Good job on tracking the sodium. I enjoyed as well paying attention to exactly how salty foods can be, especially bought and processed foods. An eyeopener.

I think one of the most difficult things was learning to eat cottage cheese with no salt added (55 mg sodium/4 oz serving vs. 455mg sodium/4 oz serving). It can be chalky tasting. I used to mix it half and half with the regular (low fat, of course) cottage cheese, but still my sodium would be high on days I ate it...until one day I discovered adding lemon juice does wonders! I usually add other stuff too, but the lemon juice just does something for it. I usually add 2T for 16 oz.

This is something I struggle with. Tonight I bought some new lower sodium salt. My downfall is the veggies. I just love them with a little soy, and that piles on the sodium. I have tried the low sodium and it seems to just take more. I am working on it though, and actually had 2 days that I stayed in range through the challenge, which for me is excellent. I think as my calorie range goes down and I am eating less food, it will help me with my sodium. Great job!
