I did it! I did my first Marathon!

And I will never forget that this has become possible because of the inspiration that I had from Spark People!

It all started 1 1/2 year ago, May 2009 when, completely by chance, I found myself surfing in the Spark People site. Up to that moment I didn't even know it existed. Well, it was like a revelation for me, it seems that it happened just the right time when I needed this most.

I became an member instantly and after a few days, already enthusiastic with SP, I found a training program titled ''from couch to 5k''. I remember I did not even understood what the ''5k'' meant! Well, it seemed so inspiring and so easy to try!

I must tell you that my relation with running up to that time was the worst possible! It was quite impossible for me even to imagine myself running. However, that sneaky sneaky training program just got under my skin and I said to myself ''why not? why not try?''. I call the program sneaky because it has a way to seem so easy and possible to do. During the weeks to come I discovered that it needed determination and strong will to run to the 5k. It was not a piece of cake but it was motivating! I saw that I could run little by little all the distances needed to reach the 5k in 3 months.

Moreover, I tried to loose weight and I did! Running was becoming easier because I was carrying less weight. When finally I did the 5k I could not believe it! I really could not believe it! For one more month I did the 5k many times just to make sure I could do it.

It was August and time for vacations by that time. When I came back from vacations I started a new program ''from 5k to 10k'' and I did my first race of 5k! Unbelievable still! Well, till the end of November I had the 10k under my feet and I knew I could do more.

I started the ''10k to 15k'' program and when I finished this too I had the idea that if I could do a half Marathon it would not be impossible for me to try the real thing too! I never told anyone! Even the half Marathon was something so far from me both in mind as in running skills.

Never say never! I did the half Marathon on 29th April which is my 53th birthday! It was exactly one year after I had started from zero! My spirits were quite high by now and I decided to try the Marathon! This time I told everyone. just to be tied to my promise.

The training program was never easy, it was long and not easy for me, but I followed it. I did my best to follow it. There were times that I couldn't, it was too heavy for me but I never stopped.

All Marathon training programs have the so called long run (32 km) just one month before the race. This was the hardest for me, I told myself that if I could do it I could go and run the Marathon. To my surprise I did the 32 km, very slowly but I did it. All the anxiety was gone after that, I had decided to do it.

I did it! I lust went to the starting line, together with other 12.500 people, I was calm because I had made the decision already, and I run the whole distance. Do not ask for my time, I did it very slowly but time was never my target, at least this first time.

When I walked through the finish line I was thrilled and not only that. I was sure I could make it and I was ready for the second try!

As I told you at the beginning of this, I want to thank all of you Spark People, I will never forget that you were my inspiration for this. I also want to thank all the people who run the SP site, you do a great job!

The motto nothing is impossible is real after all!

    WOW! You are an inspiration. I have run a few 5K races and 1 10K. I would love to do a half marathon and full marathon some day. Thanks for the inspiration! Now off for a run.

    You are brilliant! Tackling it all in small steps is a great strategy, you are to be commended for persisting and stretching your limits - just fantastic, I am so pleased for you, and inspired as well!
