How important is money?

Friday, February 25, 2011

Oy, I have a heck of a big decision to make, and I need my Sparkfriends to help me. Here's the quick back story:

In the fall of 2009 I was really unhappy with my then job, so I applied for a lot of others, including a job at Company A. I had 4 interviews with them, but I didn't end up getting the job. In March of 2010 I got a job at Company B.

Company B has it's ups and downs, sure, but for the most part, I like it! I like the people, the salary is better, and I get to be creative and go on business trips!

Suddenly, over a year after applying Company A contacted me this February. It didn't work out with the candidate they hired, and would I consider coming in for a chat. I did, not taking it too seriously, and then heard nothing for a week and a half.

Today I got a job offer for Company A - a really, really good job offer. The salary is over $5k a year more than I make and come with a great benefits package. Even more, they have already agreed to give me my honeymoon time off.

Here's where it gets sticky though... as far as I can see on the surface, the salary and benefits are the only knowable pros. The job requires me to take 2 buses, it's the opposite end of town from my fiancé, and I might end up hating it!

Plus, my bosses here are all on the road on and off for the next month. My direct supervisor is out until March 21st, the day I would have to start at Company A, and her boss is out until April! The only other supervisor is out until Thursday, but Company A needs an answer by Tuesday!!!

Company A could be a great opportunity, but the job doesn't sound nearly as fun. Company B might take me nowhere and might never pay me what Company A is offering just to start!

So what do I do? My gut doesn't want to leave, but in this economy, about to start a family with the man of my dreams, how important is the money?

Decisions like this are always hard. I do agree with the previous questions.
A big thing to look at though, because you are young and wanting to start a family, are the benefits. Do they cover you and your family? Do both places offer these? What about MatLeave? Do both places off this as well?
Give me a call tonight and we can discuss pros and cons in person. Also, Chris' input will be very important as well. Make sure you include him in this.
You can get all the advice in the world, but ultimately hun, it's going to be up to you. You are going to have to make the best decision for you and your future.

I like Yahtzee's questions - are you making enough at your present job to be happy and what level of job security do you have there. tough decision and right answers sometimes change too. So, I guess I'll pray that you have wisdom in making this decision and don't forget to talk to your fiance too because the decision will impact both of you. Again....blessings and wisdom to you.

Are you making enough money at your present job to be happy? Do either positions have any degree of job security?

You never really know what choice is the "best" choice.....not until you make the leap. I like to make lists, the pro/con type when I need to decide something...and then after it's all on paper, I see how my gut is feeling.

Good luck, I'm sure whatever choice you make will the right one for you.
