Day 18 - A picture of your biggest insecurity

Sunday, March 06, 2011

.....and the reasons why it is the biggest.

When I was in grade 4, about 7 or 8 years old, my school went to the pool for swimming lessons. Even in the beginning, I wasn't really fond of water and I was pretty short - about 4' tall - and the shallow end was 4' so instantly I had an issue. My lifeguard/instructor told me that I had two choices: get in or she would throw me in. Needless to say, the rest of the "lesson" didn't go so well. It was almost 10 years before anyone could get me into water again. I was 30 when I took my next set of swim lessons. I did okay I suppose, I'll never win any medals but at least I won't drown without a fight. The only really, REALLY good thing is that I didn't pass my fear on to my boys. Logan is one step away from "Junior lifeguard" and Colin loves the water almost as much as his brother.
Kind of takes the edge off the insecurity.

Is that Centennial Pool? I took lessons there as a kid too, taking the only school buses us city kids ever got to take! :)

I "learned" to ski the same way, courtesy of my uncle. I swore I'd never ski again.

People who threaten others like that should be pushed into their "own pool" of their fear.

I'm a totally water phobic so congrats on being able to get back into the water and not passing your fear onto your boys. I've taken adult swimming lessons twice and I still hit panic mode as soon as I know the water is over my head. I'm so not a water person!

Great job on not passing it on to your boys. That is something to be very proud of. And, for getting into the pool again on your own...big high 5s and hugs for that!

I don't mind swimming in a pool but I hate swimming in the ocean and not knowing what is beneath me in the water....I'm guessing you won't ever catch me doing a tri.....LOL

I totally understand! That is one of only 3 fears I have in this world...spiders, heights and water. Good for you to be able to over come them enough to take swimming lessons...I haven't been able to do that, though I have tried. I too haven't given my kids my fears, that makes me feel awesome!

Hopefully that method of teaching has gone with the wind... or has been thrown out with the bath water, as they used to say.
Way to go emoticon on supporting your kids and having them be none the wiser about your struggles with the water. And if Logan does become a life guard, perhaps you can feel more secure when you are in the water with him and you won't have to drown. emoticon

Kudos for having a healthy attitude around your kids...turnng an unpleasant life episode into something you can be proud of..in this case being able to encourage the boys in swimming is tremendous..you're a great mom.

So what if you will never be the great swimmer..there's a huge amount of stuff you are superb in.

The method of sink or swim years ago thankfully is no longer the way to teach..I'm sorry you had to go through that.

Wow, that's an amazing story. I never understood that method of teaching (if you ever want a small laugh, Bill Cosby has a pretty funny routine on teaching his children to swim - Couldn't find it on Youtube, but if you ever come across it...), as it just teaches children to fear the water AND the instructor. I'm very grateful to my Aunt, as she was the one who got me into swimming at a very young age - and made sure I stayed there.

Oh, Penny, I totally understand. I still don't really swim. I have taken adult lessons, both group and private and it's still an issue for me. My kids both love the water -- my daughter is at swimming lessons now. It's a huge deal for me to ensure they don't fear water the same way I do. When they get a little older, I want to take more private lessons. I will beat this fear, I will!
