Trying Something New!

Monday, March 07, 2011

Well, I've been on my program - both with food and exercise now but seem to have hit a wall. I've been reading about the 5K Your Way - Walk/Jog program and thought I'd give it a try.

I walk almost 30 minutes per day at around 3 mph on my treadmill and seemed to meet the requirements for this program. Well, I'm here to tell you that jogging for only 1 minute every 4 minutes for a total of 25 minutes is MUCH harder than I thought. I was never a jogger and always thought that the only way I'd ever run was if someone was chasing me. However, I thought that surely only a total jog of 5 minutes within 25 minutes couldn't be that bad.

Well, I'm here to tell you that it was bad! It's sad to say that I couldn't make the last minute of jogging. I'm sure that if my son was home he would have been on the floor laughing uncontrollably since he is a Marine.

So the program was set up to do this for 3 days one week, then move onto a slightly more demanding time for jogging each week for 5 weeks. Since I haven't made it even the first day, it looks like my approach will be a LOT slower. emoticon emoticon

I'm glad I tried the program, now I just have to do it "my" way ...... I have no plans to be a jogger any day soon, but it would be nice to be able to do it for a short period if I ever needed to.... like a race for a great shoe sale! emoticon You get the picture!

Have a great day and try something new - we don't know until we try whether we can do something... and I plan to keep trying Wish me luck!! emoticon

So proud of you for attempting something you thought you'd never do! I think the fact that you can even jog for a minute is outstanding, much less 3 in 25 minutes! I had a similar experience on an elliptical machine last week. I've always heard how hard they are, and ZOWIE! Now I can support that fact! I made myself do 2 minutes then did strength training machines then did 2 more. Yikes! Well, the second attempt was better, as I made it a whopping 4 minutes at one time! I'm on my way to the gym now so will see what today brings!

Way to go! I know you will build up your endurance if you keep at it! Here we go!

Hi, ya know what. The good thing about it all is that YOU DID GIVE IT A TRY! WOO HOO! I see no problem with modifying things. I know I do have some limitations and I try to work with them rather than letting them stop me. SO, I often modify things a little so that I can do them. I hope you have a great day, Karen emoticon

I modified it so the second week for 90 second intervals because I wasn't ready for the full 2 minutes. It is harder than it looks if you have never done it but you will progress quicker than you expect. I plan to be a runner and I am doing a 5K in May and I am glad I started the program. There is nothing wrong with doing it at whatever pace works for you! Good for you for trying something new!
