Dr. Amen and motivation

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

Watched his lecture yesterday. He made a Lot of sense. He suggests we talk to our undisciplined inner child the way we would if we were a stern but kind parent.
That child just wants what it wants, Now. Of course, the part of the brain that rules logical thought is turned off, when we're having that "Oh, c'mon. Live a little" craving. And the Inner child is just Feeling, not thinking.

He talks about the different kinds of food addicts. Some eat from anxiety. Some are compulsive. etc. etc. The problem with letting the child do what she wants...
The Inner child can (and will) Ruin Your Life.

When you eat that comfort food, you get a rush of Serontonin. It's exactly like a drug addict. You crave that rush. ..and you regress to your childhood.

He suggests writing down your Motivation. and LOOKING at it, several times during the Day.
He reminds us of the diseases you are prone to, when you are Obese. Cancer is one of them. There are plenty. And research shows that you are sharper, smarter, and more energetic when you are more Slim. Some of his patients were motivated to get healthy and slim, when he told them that being overweight affects your Brain, and not in a good way! Fat creates inflammation and depression and moodiness in general. Wow. I never knew about the mood influence...but I can believe it.

He also showed his own "before and afters". ...so he recommends getting help to deal with underlying emotional issues. the ones that started the overeating in the first place.

So of course, I'm dealing with my cravings like CRAZY tonight, and it's been a long time since I was wanting to comfort myself with food. It's just a mood Ellen, and it will pass. And then, I will feel SO proud of myself, for being such a good parent to myself. (i hope).

I am reading his book, "Change Your Brain Change Your Body". His approach to weight lose seems to be backed by real science. It really make sense to me. I gone to his web site. He wants to sell you a lot of products. It would be very expensive to buy all of the supplement he suggest you need to take.

Nutrition truly is the key to weight lose. It's just getting that spoiled little inter child to eat healthy and leave the junk alone.

I also watched a segment of Dr. Amen's lecture - if it hadn't been in the middle of the night (I'm not a good sleeper), I would have taken notes on what he said. I totally agree that we do not "nurture" ourselves very well - and sometimes when the "little girl" in me just needs a hug, I stuff something in my mouth instead! Food is a mighty poor substitute for love and acceptance.
