PCOS can go suck it

I've decided to write a couple of posts about PCOS for our column in the Washington Times. They're going to deal mostly with how muthafunking hard it is lose weight when you have it.

    I'm really sorry you are dealing with this. I just got checked out for a few of those symptoms, and had blood taken and two U/Ss of my uterus and ovaries, but was told everything looked fine. I've had a very difficult time loosing the weight, have depression/anxiety issues, maybe a hormonal imbalance, what seems to me as infertility for the past 6 months (russian roulette, sometimes even trying, and not one positive stick), and irregularly heavy periods (lasting 10 days, last month it was 12).

    So, since I have all these symptoms, and since you have now brought this to my attention, I'm calling my CNM tomorrow to ask her about this and if my blood was checked for testosterone.

    I'm a little nervous now, and want to do more research, but it will have to wait until morning. I'm very thankful that you have written about it. You may have just given me what I needed to make things better.

    You are NOT alone. My cousin Ginny has it, My husband's cousin (Trudy) has it, My best Jen friend has it. And IT sucks! Ginny has sideburns and in the spirit of family we totally make fun of her...well until she beats us up...She'd the oldest and we younger ones fear her :) Seriously...she's awesome. Trudy has it and does nothing about it and we support her in that choice although we don't understand it. My friend Jenn is kicking it in the taco! She went on a glutton free diet (she also found out that she was allergic to wheat AND corn) and has gone from 230 to 185 in 6 months. She is VERY sugar aware or else she LIVES on the toilet and refers to her bum as the "Ring of fire" (I've heard her hum the song from the bathroom). She has a great diet and if you wnat details, message me.
    On a side note, I have FOUR chin hairs, no PCOS, 2 for each boy pregnancy. If you get stray hair you can blame it on EVIL PCOS...I just get to say my boys shared some testostrone.

    I think this piece was your super "Grand public statement" about PCOS. As with most health issues, awareness is half the battle. Conversations like this empower other women to not take "No" for an answer when they know something is wrong and their doctor thinks they're crazy. Some things are hard to talk about, especially when they involve "extra testosterone" "obesity" and "sprouting hairs" Some people won't even talk to their doctors about embarrassing things. I know I have been guilty of that in the past. Anyhow, enough with my rambling. I just wanted to say that I'm super proud of you. You are totally going all Chuck Norris on PCOS.... and helping other women through it too. It's because you're AWESOME!

    Just read it, and I think that may be what the hell is wrong with me. I have nearly every symptom you described and had cysts show up on ultrasounds. Fan-freaking-tastic.
