Beautiful day! Went to a used book sale
Friday, April 01, 2011
Today I went to the AAUW annual used book sale. I look forward to that sale every year. I live in a small town and there are no book stores except for a college book store that sells mainly text books, and no used book stores either. The only other big used book sale is the one the city library has on Labor Day weekend.
I never go looking for any particular book or author; I go with an open mind and I check out whatever looks interesting to me. Often when I am at one of those sales, I will run into someone I know and they have recommended books to me that they have read before.
Today I spent $16.50 and got all these:
Life of Pi by Yann Martel; heard a lot of good things about this book and it was on my "want to read" list, I was excited to find it for only $2 today!
Day After Night by Anita Diamant
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Atonement by Ian McEwan; another one that was on my "want to read" list, it was a good movie.
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier
Ferney by James Long
Fall On Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald
One True Thing by Anna Quindlen
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou; I read this as a teenager and it was one of my favorites, it will be interesting re-reading it now as an adult.
Years of Wonder: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks
Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang
The Girl in the Green Sweater: A Life in the Holocaust's Shadow by Krystyna Chiger
The Girls from Ames by Jeffrey Zaslow
Still Alice by Lisa Genova
The Rector's Wife by Joanna Trollope
Up and Down the River Anthology, a local book. It's a collection of essays and stories by people in my hometown of Big Rapids, Michigan, mostly about life in town here, past and present.
Really feeling the pain in my arm and shoulder today; spent too much time carrying around those books. Have taken 2 pain pills today, but I'm still really glad I didn't miss the sale. Some people suffer for beauty, I suffer for books, lol!
Feeling very tired again today, but I think most of my fatigue today is from the pain pills. The weather is nice today, sunny and up in the mid to upper 40's. I stopped to talk to a neighbor and played with her dog a little bit on my way back from getting the mail; I hadn't talked to her for a long time. With the winter weather, most people in the neighborhood weren't spending that much time outside. It's nice in the spring to see people spending more time outdoors and having neighborly visits.
We have some rain and possibly snow coming for the weekend; I am hoping it's just rain, and that it will wash away the rest of the snow. But even if we do get snow, I don't think it's going to be much, at least not enough where it has to be shoveled.
