Saturday evening June 4 at 7 pm, my husband and I ran our first 5k together and it was a hoot! This was the June Bug Jog 5k put on by the Rock River Striders in Hampton, IL at the Hampton Nature Center along the Mississippi River. This is part of the same bike path that Jim and I love to use in the non-Winter months. This is yet another 5k race in a long list of other 5k races I have enjoyed. This was Jim’s second 5k and he was totally pumped! June Bug Jog was the very first evening race we participated in and it was fun.
The weather had been threatening throughout the day and the temps were very warm and the humidity high. The breeze was nonexistent. MUGGY! This is a flat and fast course, but with the weather conditions I decided a PR would most likely not be in the cards. That would prove to be the case.
Jim and I got all dolled up, geared up and stoked up. We arrived at the Nature Center in plenty of time and we sat and watched the itty bitty kids run their fun runs So cute. It was finally time to get all ready and do a slight warm up jog. I was pitting out already.
We toed the line and we were off. Jim and I started out together but that didn’t last long LOL. Jim is still at about 14 m/m where I am at 10-ish m/m 5k race pace. I left him in my dust but he did not care cuz he was a happy camper.
I took off way too fast…NOT unusual for me. My first mile was 9:58 m/m which was totally absurd for me given the weather conditions. With each passing mile I was pooping out. If there was a mistake to be made, I did it. But you know what? I don’t care as I am not a very competitive runner. I run for the enjoyment and for the challenges I can conquer. I love the racing atmosphere.
As I rounded the last corner and saw the timing clock, I was pretty happy with my time which was 32-ish something (official results will be out SOON). My best time was 30:26 so its going to be for another day.
I grabbed the cold wash cloths they were giving out, an ice cold water and waited for my Jim to come in. So in the meantime I was yakking with other milling around the finish line as we were telling wild running stories. Jim came around the bend to finish and he looked like one cool cucumber and he was having a ball.
He PRed and now he is really hooked on this running thing. Jim was flying high and enjoyed the evening immensely. I am so happy for him!!!
We went on inside to eat sandwiches, fruit, assorted food items and more water. The awards were starting and of course we did not win a door prize. We never do but that’s okay.
Want to see what I received?
I received 2nd in my age group!!! I was so happy, thrilled and beyond giddy! This does not happen very often to me for 5k’s but when it does it just lights my running fires more.
It was such a wonderful “date night” with Jim and we were doing something that we both love…enjoying the many moments that running gives you!
