A couple of weeks ago, there were rumors of layoffs at my company. It is all hush hush and unless you happen to know someone who is affected, you might not even know it is going on. It seems to me that layoffs are a "never ending" story that hurt many people. It used to be that maybe I could understand why some layoffs happened -- job performance, skills required, etc. However, that is no longer the case. You can simply be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In my mind, it is no longer the stigma that it used to be although it is still as painful with this job economy.

I heard that one person committed suicide and may not have even been directly impacted by the layoffs. Of course, no one is talking and it wasn't at my location. However, I can only hurt even thinking that someone could take their life over a "job".

Life lessons can be terribly tough for many people and certainly not fair. However, I believe that we all need identities that are NOT linked to the "job" we current perform. The old days of a "job" defining who we are and our self worth need to re-evaluated.

I've been spared this time, but I have no doubt that one day I will be in this situation. I pray that I can handle it knowing that I have a family that cares for me and we will try to get through it together.
Mostly, I hope that our top business executives will actually think about what they are doing to good people. My company is doing very well in this economy. There is no reason for these actions other than to continue to drive down costs for even more profits in the near future.

I know this is a very serious topic for a Blog but it is all I can think about now. Take Care!

So many people have or are about to lose their jobs. Small businesses are failing right and left - I wonder where and when this will stop and our country get back on track.

Wow. I am so sorry - this sounds very stressful and sad for the affected parties.

    Sending big hugs.

I retired about 3 years ago from the City where I live and since I've left there have been layoffs and 1 day a week off without pay for many City employees. . .It hasn't really affected Management people yet but I'm sure eventually it will. There is no such thing as job security no matter how great you are at your job! This is directly related to the poor economy in the US right now. Keep your chin up and let's hope for the best!

I am glad you have been spared this time. I do know first hand how layoffs can effect a family. It just seems to be a sign of the times right now. It is something that is happening all over the country right now. All we can do is pray that things improve. Thank you for posting, Karen emoticon

Yes, it seems the way of our world, now. It's so sad. I wish the country could jump back to what it used to be, where there really were American-made things to buy, and we had faith in our government and everyone was proud of our country. The layoff situation has hit so many people I've known and in my extended family.

    I'll pray for you.

So glad you were spared but how sad about the others. I can't even imagine what that must feel like. I remember a few times in my life when I wasn't sure how I was going to pay my bills and it is a stressful situation to be in. God bless you with less stress, and God bless all those affected by a layoff.

Well, guess I'm "old-school" but I still pretty much define myself by employment - and as I've had a lot of issues in that area, let's just say it's really "s**ked to be me" for a long time now.....even NOW as I'm not in the place, status-wise, that I want to be.....

Can't help but wonder, though, if any of this corporate insanity is EVER going to end.....things just seem to get worse and worse each year.....

I wish you and your family all the best.....

I couldn't help but notice your title for this blog and had to read it. It is a sad situation in this time right now. I am one that has been affected. Even the military is not safe. My husband was forced into a medical honorable discharge. He said there were over 200 in his discharge class all there for very minor issues such as weight. Really, it was the Coast Guard's way of "layoffs". Everybody is hurting. We are lucky enough to have family helping us right now. My husband, 9 month old daughter, and I are living with his grandfather. My husband has found a job, but I have not because I'm either overqualified or underqualified for what seems like everything. Still, I have hope and that is what we have to go on. Hope and support. I'm glad you posted this even though it is a heavy subject. But it is one that many of us can identify with and it helps to know there is support out there. Thanks for posting.
