Hello - A little about me.

Saturday, June 11, 2011

Hello, Sparkers, my name is Ryan. I just wanted to extend a greeting to all of you who may or may not be lurking around; which I don't think is many, seeing as my only Spark buddy is my girlfriend. I guess if I add a lot of people later you can all come back, read this, and consider it a retroactive hello.
My fitness history, at a glance, is pretty simple. I steadily grew larger as a teenager - most of my growing lent itself toward my rather robust mid-section. In my mid 20's I got interested in nutrition. I studied it day in and day out. I ate (literally), breathed, and lived by my new nutritional standard, applying all of my accumulated knowledge. I went from 220+ to 150; and, as you can imagine, became exceedingly thin.
As a result of having met the love of my life, however, I became lax and lost all semblance of better judgement when it came to food. The yearning to eat and savor delicious meals is much harder to resist when you have a partner there to share the joy. Also, when growing that close to someone, you have little reason to hide anything (like a belly) so you let down your guard when it comes to overeating. I began to put on weight again, like a giant yo-yo on its way back up.
Fortunately, the very partner I mentioned earlier was there to snap me out of my chinese-buffet addled state of mind. I am not opposed to exercise, yet I have only enjoyed nominal success at best when going at it alone. With her as an inspiration - not just her own success and weight loss, but the daily determination in the face of constant temptation - I was finally motivated to begin my own reclamation of a more visually appealing physique.
I was reluctant to join Spark People, seeing as this is primarily weight-loss-centric community, but finally gave in at her insistence. You see, I'm actually trying to GAIN weight; albeit weight of a more pleasant kind. I'm trying to build lean mass in the form of pure muscle. Yes, I hope to lose a percentage of body fat and watch my belly dwindle away; but my overall weight doesn't concern me as much as the gains in strength and the acquisition of a lean, muscled shape.
Currently I am supplementing with a multivitamin, glucosamine & MSM, fish oil, creatine monohydrate, L-Arginine, and Hydrolized Whey Protein Isolates. I consume a macro nutrient spread of roughly 40% protein, 40% carbohydrates, and 20% healthy fats. I try to eat OVER my average BMR to stimulate muscle growth, though I may be burning more than I consume with my increased work load. I exercise three times a week - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I work out at night, and generally go to sleep for 8 hours+ right after. I follow a Rippetoe workout, focusing mainly on compound movements, high weight, low reps.
If any readers have any questions, comments, or concerns - please let me know! Thank you for reading, and I'm glad to be a part of Spark People.

Hi Ryan, great blog! You might want to substitute the arginine and creatine for No-Explode or the new SuperPump from Gaspari, powdered glutamine (about 20 to 30 grams a day), and powdered BCCA's (about 10 to 15 grams). Also, I don't see a multi-mineral in your diet regimen. I take all the other stuff your taking, but trying to lose 20 pounds right now, so no No-Explode. In 2000 and 2001, Dave Carr used to buy the Met-Rx creatine monohydrate and HMB complex from my store, but the creatine has changed since then. I would throw in the HMB when you start to lower your calories to conserve muscle. Take care. emoticon

emoticon Hello to you to. my son who is 16 is into building body mass I try to tell him not to over do it since his body is still growing. He joined a strength and conditioning class in high school. Really really likes it. This may sound dumb but I use to think i should lose weight before i did toning took me for ever to realize I could do them hand in hand. Trust me I don't want to gain huge muscle mass Dh my throw me to the curb LOL!!
Its great to meet you and I wish you and Mel the best in alh area's of your lives not just your health Journey.

Ryan - Welcome to SparkPeople! I too have had a yo yo battle with my weight. I got married, stated working and raising kids...before I knew it I ballooned to 340 lbs! Well at the age of 45 I finally wised up and started a one year campaign to reclaim my health. Like you I have been very concerned about loosing muscle mass as I lost weight, so I eat a
lot of protein and have used P90X (which has been very helpful).

Congratulation on your weight loss so far and I wish you all the best and much success on your journey! Keep me posted on how the muscle building goes, because I am sure I could use some tips over the next couple of months.

Stay strong and keep up the great work!

We sound like we've been down a similar path. I started at 230 went to almost 150. I went nutso with the diet and cardio and lost a ton of muscle. Once I realized that the physique wasn't there and why (no strength training), I decided to put some weight back on in the form of fat free muscle mass. I'm just wrapping up my first "bulk" phase where I've gone from 150 to 180. It took a year. I'm pretty happy with the results, but now I'm going to cut a bit and I've outlined a 10 pound/10 week cut where the lifting regiment continues but diet changes.

Best of luck to you. It is unusual around these parts to intentionally GAIN weight, but there are folks out there.
