23 Seconds.....

Monday, July 04, 2011

Happy 4th of July everyone! I can say that I have had an amazing day!!!!

I started the day off with a 10K run....

I woke up super nervous, and it took a while to get my mind wrapped around the task at hand. I got dressed, blue shorts, red top (how patriotic of me huh?) and ate a banana and yogurt. I usually don't like to eat before - but with the 10K I needed something. I also drank some water, and put on my sunscreen!!!

Off to the race I go.....hubby and I talked, and he wasn't sure if he would meet me at the finish or not (we live 1.5 miles from the race, so they would ride their bikes to the Stadium.)....I told him to let the boys sleep if that was what they were doing - no need to wake the monsters...especially after the late night last night.....

So I get to the Stadium, and park, and head to the port-a-pots....for one last pit....and then up to the start......

I passed Captain America, Wonder Woman and the American Flag en route (yes they were all in costume, and the Flag was a one piece unitard type thing that covered his face too.. CRAZY).

I decided that I would start right around the 10 minute pace, so that I didn't get tied up in the walkers. There were close to 4,000 people running, so it was PACKED. We got some words of encouragement by Bill Rodgers (Boston and New York marathon winner as well as many others) and then I saw the Hoyts....goodness....they are amazing. Dad must be close to 70 if not 75 now, and he pushes his son in a wheel chair. They have done uncountable marathons and other races.....google them - they are truly an inspiration.

Then the National Anthem was sung....and then bam...the gun.....

It seemed like after the gun went off, I stood still for hours...but it must have been a couple of minutes....and then we turtle walked, and then slow jog until the start. I started my watch when I crossed the start......and my music.

the first mile of the race runs through the parking lot of Gillette Stadium. I was moving at a pretty good clip, and at one point I heard someone say that it was an 8:45 pace....at which I pulled up a bit...I typically run 10 minute/ 10:30's so I was moving way to quick. I hit 1 mile at about 9:30, and 2 miles at 20.....

Honestly - I don't remember much between 2 and 5, I just moved, and played with my intervals....I did 15/1, 10/1 a couple of times, and then I just ran/walked as needed.

Right about the 4.5 mile mark, there was a lady on her front lawn with sprinkler...typically I don't go through but I was so HOT.....I followed the group ----- she had a horseshoe shape on her lawn from the path of feet.

About 4.5 miles I started to feel gased.....rightfully so - as my longest run before today was 4.5...so I shortened up the intervals to 4/1 and kept plugging along until about 5.5.....and then I was toast....so I think I walked 2 minutes and the end was in site....ran/walk for the next .3 and at that point I'm coming to the Stadium....

Time to turn it back on.....

Run through the tunnel....ahhh - shade....starting to gain momentum....I can see that giant inflatable helmet.......so as I come up to that.....a little fist pump for the camera......

Then it's on the field....it's all or nothing time....I can see the clock and it looks good, so I PUSH......full out 50 yard sprint. I passed 10 people :)

Crossed the 50 with a smile and fist pump and a whew...I'm done. My watch said 1:09:37.

My goal was 1:10....so I did it by 23 seconds. I don't know what my official time is - but it has to be close...I HOPE......but I'm sticking with my watch time, because I started and stopped it on the start and finish......

Last year I was 1:16, so I was 7 minutes faster than last year.... YEHHH HAWWWW.

I didn't have time to relish in it much...I had to get home, shower, and hit the road, as hubby and I had Red Sox tickets for the afternoon. They were given to us by a wonderful friend. We were 8 rows off of home plate - doesn't get much better than that....except maybe a Sox win.....

I did have a kielbasa dog with mustard at the game, but drank water and diet soda.....and then some Chinese for dinner - calories for the day are over - but I'm OK with that......

It was a great day!
