#505: Following Our Dreams Without Regrets

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

"When a dream is calling you, there's just one thing that you can do. Well, you gotta follow that dream wherever that dream may lead." -- Elvis Presley, "Follow That Dream."

I realized yesterday, mowing the lawn of all things, with this song running through my mind, that we all have dreams, some large and some small, and that following them does not mean dropping everything and moving to a new town.

It may be as simple as signing up for lessons to fulfill a dream of playing a musical instrument or going to a gym for the first time as the first step toward a dream of getting in shape and losing weight.

Following a dream may not necessarily cause a change in the world but simply may be one that provides us inner satisfaction and pride of accomplishment such as running a mile, doing 20 pushups, singing in a choir or teaching someone to read.

"Keep a-movin, move along, keep a moving," Elvis sings and that is exactly what we need to do to fulfill our dreams -- keep moving in a positive direction taking consistent steps to take us one more stride, one more positive day toward our goals.

Although his song's words relate to finding true love, the message of following our dreams is an important reminder to follow our dreams without fear of failure or uncertainty and without regrets or recriminations for failing to act.

One of the saddest things we can do in our lives is to give up on something important to us, in essence failing to try to make our dreams come true.

Imagine how grand it would be if we could live our lives as another famous singer, Frank Sinatra, sang, "Regrets, I've had a few, but then again two few to mention."

..."I've lived a life that's full -
I've travelled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets? I've had a few,
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course -
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew,
When I bit off more than I could chew,
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way.

...To think I did all that,
And may I say, not in a shy way -
Oh no. Oh no, not me.
I did it my way.

...Yes, it was my way."

We may have regrets over things we wanted to do but have yet to accomplish, but why don't we vow, right now, that we will dust off those dreams and chart a course to accomplish them before our end truly comes?

One of my dreams I've had since a young child is to visit Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, even for a long weekend and even if by myself. With you, I vow I will price airfare, car rental and motel and begin saving to fulfill that lifelong dream.

In future blogs I'll share other dreams and what steps can be taken right now, right where I live, to bring those dreams to reality.

Will you do the same? Will you share in your reply or your blogs what some of your dreams are then list the steps you will need to take to make that dream come true?

Let's do it our way!

Let's follow our dreams!

I liked this so I thought I would share it with you. God Bless .

    Go After Your Dreams

You're good, but you're going to be great.
You're the best, but you're going to get better.

It's up to you to find the key that unlocks the door to a more fulfilling life.

    Cross your bridges.

    Meet your challenges.

Reach out for your dreams, and bring them closer and closer to your heart.

Get rid of the "if only's" and get on with whatever you need to do to get things right.

Go after what you want in life, with all the blessings of all the people who care about you. And find out what making your wishes come true really feels like.

Great blog, reminded me of my to-do list. I recently thought of making a list of my dreams and start figuring out steps I can start taking to reach them. Yet, weeks later I forgot to do that. Its funny/sad how life can get in the way of these things.

Thanks for reminding me of something important I need to do. I am confident you'll get to the Carlsbad Caverns!

One dream of mine is to travel. I know I want to see Ireland and Australia and I'd like to visit all 50 states. I ought to look into some traveling books and find some beautiful or historical locations to visit.

Great blog, Lou! We're taking on one of our dreams in January 2012: we went sailing in the Virgin Islands in 1995 and 1996 and LOVED it. When we went back to school in 2000, we vowed we'd give ourselves a graduation present of a return trip to the Islands. That was over three years ago and we still don't really have the money for it, but we took money out of our retirement funds and we're GOING. emoticon

Another dream I have is walking or running the Marine Corps Marathon here in Washington, DC. Mind you, I'm almost 58 and I don't jog...much. emoticon

I've been thinking a lot about my dreams lately, which ones to pursue and which ones to wait on.

    Have a wonderful day Lou!

This has inspired me to pursue my dream NOW. I've been pondering it for too long. I want to be a graphic and website designer and I WILL DO IT!!!

My first short term goal is too look into colleges or universities. Then apply for a student loan. Now that this is in writing, it feels real. I look forward to sharing my progress on Spark.

Thanks again, Lou, for the inspiration!

Challenging us, eh? Well, let's see....

I question what my dreams are almost every day because I really don't know any more. At 55, I'm at a point in life that feels like I'm in the middle of a Scale, having balanced my marriage, my job, my kids, and me. Now it's time to take a step to one side, which will get those scales off balance for awhile, but I know it will come back to center eventually. Problem is, faced with a list of possibilities, I don't really know what to choose.

This is a good problem to have. I just need to figure it out.

Looking forward to hearing your dreams.

For me, a timely blog. Since I've lost so much weight & gotten fit, I've realized the power of taking tiny little steps, every day, to realize your dreams. Recently, inspired by other sparkers, I've started thinking about a mid-life career switch. Scary to think of being a student again & starting again... but I want to follow my heart & passions, not just have a job. Thanks for giving me another little nudge forward.

I agree giving up on your dreams is so very sad. I love your idea about sharing and planning.

I always dreamed of playing the piano. I think I will see about lessons this winter.

I'm usually a "do it my way" person.

At least I try to be.
