August is a very special month for me, first it was my birthday August 5th and my SparkVersary on the 19th. I can hardly believe that a year has gone by....where does the
time go! I have had many events this past year but one in very particular that made me take a look, I mean really look at my weight issues. In November of 2010 I was scheduled to have a knee replacement when several days before I had 4 clots in my left leg and one travelled to my lung, which is called a pulmonary embolism. Being a nurse I knew the danger here and I have thanked God every day since for sparing me. This really shook me for a
while and my eating healthy went out the window. It finally dawned on me that I had to
"get my act together" and this has taken me a long time. For quite awhile I was afraid to do
exercise, I was still short of breath at times and to be honest I was frightened. This is when I began to seriously look at what Spark had to offer me. Spark People is a wealth of information on any subject. Its like finding the "Pot of Gold" at the end of the rainbow.
Its offerings to us is invaluable and at the same time it can be overwhelming but you need to just stop and think what is important to you, do you need to read about nutrition, exercise, calories, carbs, are you diabetic? Whatever subject interests you Spark has for you. Now I come to the most valuable asset and that is the friendships that we discover on Spark. All of you know what I am talking about. Our friends are there for us whenever we need support, a shoulder or even a good cry. Our friends give us words of encouragement and help us celebrate even the smallest milestone. They are priceless. Throughout this year I have met some wonderful friends on Spark People. I value those friendships and they are very precious to me. Some of these friends have lost a lot of weight and I say to myself, if they can do it, so can I! Some of my friends are still struggling to lose those pounds, but what is most important is that we are all working at it! While I have not lost a lot of weight on this first SparkVersary, I know where my road is taking me. For the first time in a long time I am focused, I have a meal plan that needs tweaking from time to time. I finally took myself, this week, back to the YMCA for my one hour water aerobic class. I went to class for 4 days this week and I am very happy to say that I lasted the hour without any problem and we had quite a workout each day.

I have always been slim for the majority of my life. I started to gain weight around the age of 60 and when I retired at 62, that is when I started to put on the pounds. I am now 69 and by the time I reach 70 next August, I expect to be at my goal! I look forward to each day and when I wake up in the morning after thanking God for this day, I wonder what news from Spark will be in my e-mails and I am anxious to see what my friends have planned for the day.

I guess you know, the last I will mention are the Teams. The challenges are what we look for, we check it out and think to ourselves "I Can Do That" and then we sign up. If we have a bad day, the team Cheers us on and if we had a success or an Aha moment, our team members Celebrate with us. We need to celebrate all our accomplishments, no matter how small, a 1/2 lb loss is a celebration because another 1/2 lb loss equals 1 pound gone forever!
So, Celebrate we must! Most important of all we know we are not Alone! So, now I move forward......my knee replacement is now scheduled for October 7th and then I will have had both knees replaced and I shall be the Exercise Queen! For a few weeks after the situation I had thought to myself, I must be on borrowed time but no that is not true. What God gave me was More Time to accomplish what I need to accomplish and continue my journey to become what He wants me to be and to appreciate many, many angels that I call my Spark Friends. Love & Thankfulness to Spark & my Spark friends! June

Good for you. You will definitely find it easier to exercise with your new knee.
I had my first full knee replacement 2 years ago and my quality of life has reached new levels. There are still a few exercises that won't be possible, but I'm doing everything I can do. I will probably have to have my other knee done within the next two years. I'm looking forward to having 2 bionic knees. I'm still including my knee exercises in my daily routine. Although, I'm not doing them 4 times a day like before and after surgery required. Keep strong and I'll be sending powerful thoughts your way, for a speedy recovery.

June, My very dear friend, this very honest and heartfelt blog brought tears to my eyes. You have come such a long way in a short time. Yes, a year is a short time and it gets shorter as time goes by. I believe that God did spare you for a reason. I know that you will reach your goal by your 70th birthday and what a celebration of life that will be. But the one thing that I have learned about you, in the short time that I have known you, is that you CELEBRATE life everyday!!! A very Happy 1st SparkVersary! I am so happy and proud to be your friend. emoticon emoticon emoticon
