Mom, would you like to go for a walk?

Saturday, August 27, 2011

How do you say no? Well why would I. I told her that I would go if she expanded the walk to 3 miles so it could be incorperated into tri training. We speed walked, averaged 4 mph which is ok by me. Huge hill to work on those glutes.
Walking with an almost 20 year old daughter. We talk about the boy she likes. The realization that if she is struggling to pay for community college that something has to change for her to pay for a school that she goes away to.... We talk about friends, sleepovers, dreams aspirations....
We talk about how Dad and I went from super strict to openly giving so much more freedom. My explanation is that a parent has to let a child have room to have life lessons when they are a young adult. I have taught morals and such and now it is time for her to spread her wings and be there to support her while she fixes mistakes made... She had a lightbulb moment of understanding.
The end of the walk ends with her telling me things about herself that she is not proud of and that i would not approve of.... i wish we would have talked about it walking up that big hill, now that would have been a burst up the hill. reread paragraph before this one.... urgh.
All in all a great walk and a great opportunity to move toward a shared goal of good health.
time to pick up the yard for tropical storm Irene. Dont want to see my play yard stuff flying around the yard.

It's so nice that you were able to have that special time, Jeanne. We all know they end much too quickly.

I have always said that being a parent is the toughest job in the world. We all do what we believe is the best for our child (children), but alas don't know if what we did was really the right thing until they've grown up. We do our best to instill all the right things in them, and then all we can do is pray that it worked.

You have always been such a GREAT Mom. Both of your girls are so very, very special and I love them dearly, as I do you & Dana, too!

As a parent of two boys and one girl, I wish the boys were as forthcoming with their concerns, dreams, fears, etc.. as my daughter is. But kudos to you for having an open communication with her and nurturing that relationship so she continues to share with you. It is a very special time (even though you may not want to know it all.:)

As hard as it was to hear, it's awesome that she feels she can share stuff she knows you don't want to hear with you.

Hope Irene didn't do too much damage!

Awesome that you got some daughter time in! I'm a bit envious. I see my daughter since she got her newfound freedom when she wants something from me. No bueno!

Here's hoping she'll come around! emoticon

Reading this blog remnds me of the last 5 days I spent with my daughter at the lake. Yep, sometimes the things they share you wish they would keep to themselves, lol! We sure did have a great time though.

It isn't easy being a parent like you said but I know you feel as I do....."Sure wouldn't want to be without them!" :)

I dropped her off at her condo but I know being a parent didn't stop at eighteen...it's a lifetime commitment....SHEEESH! ha ha

Way to go on the walking and yardwork.

Sounds like a WONDERFUL moment!! Being a parent is tough NOW you and I know how are Moms felt!!!

Ross called me a fish the same as my Mom a few weeks ago when he was home I was swimming and he chatted away as I did laps at my cousin's house - a nice moment for us too!

THANK GOD he is NOT on a boat this weekend - boats are canceled and he did not have HURRICANE WATCH either ON A BOAT!
