This week I experienced two inspiring moments. The first, if you haven't seen it, is the following video showing the true character and sportsmanship of school softball players.
The second was a brief conversation I overheard before a meeting.
"How are things?" a woman asked a man next to her.
"Sometimes life stinks," he replied.
"Yes, it does," she said, "but when it does you don't have to smell it."
I thought of her remark often over the past couple of days and the more I repeat it to myself the more I appreciate the simplicity and inspiration in what she said.
We can all agree that, yes, life does often stink. Life frequently seems unfair and depressing. Life, despite all of its happiness, does very often stink.
But think of what she said. "Yes it does, but when it does you don't have to smell it."
In different words, when life gets us down, we don't have to stay down. We don't have to wallow in the mud of despair and disappointment but should realize that our happiness comes from within us.
So when life gets to be too much, remember, life may stink but we don't have to smell it.
Instead, let's stop and smell the roses and be thankful for the positive blessings that come our way.
