Setting out on a grain-free or very reduced grain life...

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

After several weeks or illness and sinus ear infections, I'm not in a great position to tell whether or not Paleo makes me feel better or not. It's been the strangest transition. I got fever on Friday, November 11 and haven't felt well since, having been beset by sinus infection, bad double ear infection. I'm on day 7 of the antibiotics, and I'm better, but the ear STILL hurts a bit. I'm tired. I started not eating grains on the evening of November 14th. Still pushing hard at work, though, due to a high-stakes, high-pressure project. Again, I'm not in a position to judge Paleo against a baseline. HOWEVER...

One of my close friends is a diabetic whose numbers have been so bad her doctor told her he was probably going to need to start insulin, as diet wasn't working. I had her listen to a podcast of an interview of Wheat Belly author Dr. William Davis (Greg Everett, Robb Wolf) and she was transfixed. I ran out and picked up a copy of the book for her and one for me.

She quit wheat the next day (Nov. 15) and her numbers having been dropping, dropping, dropping and are now staying in the prediabetic range! It is like a miracle! I love her almost daily calls and emails about how she feels way better, AND the sugar numbers to back it all up.

This is why I believe in this program. I will wait until I've been well for 30 days to say what it is I feel. I've lost about 6 pounds in one week, but it could be due to just muscle loss and lack of appetite and long sleeps. I'm in tough shape!

You are right. I need to get on it with the probiotics. And google prebiotics! I figured as soon as I was done with this nasty powerful antibiotic, I should start adding yogurt and acidophillus pills? I feel like I'm committing murder putting them in my body only to be killed by antibiotics right now, but I am perhaps wrong about that?

    Thank you for the reminder!

May I recommend that you start dosing with prebiotics and probiotics? Antibiotics really do a number on gut flora, and gut flora plays a huge role in how our food is digested and processed. You may find you feel better from the food if you can get your insides back to normal.
