Teen Projects for Ancient Civ class

Saturday, December 03, 2011

Here are some of the teen projects from my last class, this last Monday; My daughter tie-dyed a t-shirt using natural items, such as blackberries. Fabric dyeing was something the Egyptians and others from this time period did.
Most of the students used a recipe in their book that called for a meringue like frosting (egg whites). This particular bread used no frosting (just powdered sugar) and the lemon was very lightly used.
This one was closest to the recipe which called for yogurt and lemon. The frosting was mostly egg-whites that are beaten into white stiffed peaks and included honey. There were two other cakes as well...and some cupcakes...TOO MUCH CAKE! I had a taste of each and they were very similar. We decided that the sweet honey frosting was a little too much sweetness. The bread was the best because it wasn't Too sweet.

Here is the recipe but my disclaimer is that this is not a good SP decision, lol.
This represented the land of milk and honey!
    1 c butter
    2 c sugar
4 eggs, separated and at room temp
1 c plain yogurt (greek was used)
    3 c flour
    1/4 t salt
    4 t baking powder
    3 t lemon extract
Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Ad the egg yolks one at a time, beating until creamy. Stir in yogurt. Add flour, salt, baking powder, lemon extract. Mix well. Beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry and mix one third into batter. Fold in remaining egg whites. Turn into a 10" tube pan and bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 60 minutes.
    1/2 c honey; 2 egg whites, room temp; 1/4 t salt; 1/8 t cream of tartar
Bring honey to boil in saucepan. Beat in egg whites until frothy, add salt and cream of tartar. Continue to beat. When egg whites hold soft peaks, slowly add honey in a thin stream. Continue to beat until meringue is stiff and glossy.

I love the tie dyed shirt! My son and I dyed fabric with beets for a cookbook project he did and that was fun - and turned out similar to the shirt. That meringue looks like it was beautifully done! I think that's a hard technique, it's cool that a kid did it! Thanks for sharing Beth, I sure like to see these projects!

I saw the leftovers coming out of your class and they all looked great! Too funny that the majority chose food projects. LOL
