we really don't need them in food and especially not in medicine. when will companies stop wasting money using these things?

As for the fillers, I once questioned a pharmacist about why my refill prescription was a much larger pill than previously. First he acted as if I had accused him of trying to poison me -- aren't we supposed to question a prescription that looks wrong? -- then he explained they had put more filler in because people had complained it was too bitter. Personally, I don't expect medicines to taste like pudding pops.

On the other hand, I understand some old-fashioned remedies deliberately included unpleasant-tasting ingredients, so that "folks would know they'd been medicined."

Probably never. The thing is that there is a psychology to color. These mega companies know this and use it. Another thing pharmaceutical companies do is add what I call fluffers and fillers to make their pill bigger. In most cases they also are not needed. To these companies it is not a waste of money. I do agree with you that we don't need them.
