In Praise of SparkPeople

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Back in 2009, friend at work had told me about SparkPeople when we were lamenting about our thyroid issues. I had been on Jenny Craig but wanted to track my calories and not just what I was eating. She told me about SparkPeople and the only thing I was using it for was food tracking. That was it. I wasn't reading the articles, I wasn't blogging and I certainly didn't join any of the groups.

From JC, I went onto Weight Watchers. Which I know is a good program but just didn't work for me. I wasn't really getting the support or had any outlets for my frustrations, victories or when I stuffed a Voodoo Doughnut in my mouth. :)

At the beginning of December (2011) I realized I wasn't going to get healthy, lose weight and be more active on my own. I needed support. I thought about returning to the gym but the time I go in the mornings I knew wouldn't offer me the support I needed. Plus, I'm competitive and over do it, which causes me to injure my out of shape body and then I'm not working out for months.

I don't know what sent me back to SP, but I reopened up the site and started looking around. All I can say is wow. Here was my motivation all along. There are real people on here that are looking for the exact same things I'm looking for to be a healthier person. I've joined several groups that are in line with my interests, my needs and what is going to motivate me. I'm blogging daily. I've become addicted to gaining Spark Points so I can give Spark Goodies to others and also to myself when I hit certain goals.

For once I'm excited about what I'm doing. I've been sleeping hard the last few nights. This morning, after only 6 hours of sleep I was wide awake and ready to work out. I did a 40 minute workout, ate breakfast and called into work to see if we are weather delayed (we are, opening two hours late). So here I am at 7:30 in the morning blogging about what I've accomplished so far today.

So that you SparkPeople....the administrators, the team leaders but mostly thank you to all of the people just like me. We're all searching for stronger, healthier minds, bodies and spirits in our efforts to get and give the most out of our lives.

Have a wonderful day everyone!!
