For the cravings part: make sure you are getting enough iron at least a week before you menstruate, it will also help with the mood swings a bit too. Low iron will cause you to have cravings. Tampons are not that bad, frankly I have to use tampons and pads at the same time! I tried the Diva Cup and find it to be a bit messy, but that is just my personal experience and opinion. I have to really drag myself to do any exercise when it is that time of month. Maybe just try putting your shoes to walk for 10 minutes and then you will feel accomplished without completely stopping your routine.

Mujer, I get the same as FEB, I waste half the month too!
And yes, try to get through it with exercise is a great idea.
About the tampons, try them, you'll see what everyone says, they will change your life

Brian36 you're totally right, I'm going to have to just exercise through it. I'm going to atleast just start with walking. Thanks for recommending me some brands, I think I'm going to have to muster up the courage to try them!

I am the nastiest biotch the week before my period and don't have cravings, but I just seem to need to shovel food in my mouth constantly. The best way I've found to deal with them is to exercise.

Like you I was a pads-only kinda girl, but when I got serious about working out I knew I had to make the jump to tampons. I was 37 when I made the switch so talk about a serious leap! Anyway it definitely made a difference. And just last year, like FEB_SHOWERS16 said, the Diva Cup is the most amazing invention. I train for distance running and doing a 10 mile run with a tampon just doesn't cut it. You can read about it online for a description of how it works. I think they are way more comfortable than tampons. I think they're a little on the expensive side, but definitely worth the expense.

For me, the exercise works off the mood swings and has the added benefit of decreasing the duration of my periods. Besides, as long as I'm working out, I'm not eating.

If you decide to try tampons first, save yourself some trauma and get the Tampax Pearl or KotexU. Just my 2 cents.

I've been experiencing the same thing- as I get older, and since I had kids, I've been noticing much more trouble (mood swings and cravings) with my periods. It's gotten to the point where I just expect for almost half of my month to be out of whack!
I was doing so good toward the end of March and then as soon as early April came- forget it... I gained all the weight I had lost in March. I'm just now recovering from my period.
I don't have much advice because I'm also seeking a solution. But I am TRYING to be prepared by having healthy snacks so I don't binge on terrible things. One thing that does seem to help me bounce back quicker is if I force myself to stay consistent with the working out. I can usually get through the binges and the overeating IF (and only if) I've continue working out... even with my period.
Regarding tampons... yes, they are much more comfortable than pads. My favorite is the Diva Cup but if you're grossed out at the prospect of using Tampons then you're probably not going to like the cup... lol!!
