Walking is my salvation!

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

I have become one of the best walking advocates on SP. I know that we can all exercise a little more but some of us don't and we should all feel guilty for that emoticon. But this blog is for all of us who don't like the fitness center, hate fitness DVDs and love the couch. GET OUT AND WALK!

I've been doing really well with SP. I had lost a lb or so every week since I joined until I hit a plateau a few months ago. The plateau lasted for several weeks and no amount of food deprivation could make go away.Around the time of the evil plateau my company stepped up their efforts of getting more control over health insurance costs and decided to try for a more fit workface.

They issued a bunch of rewards for doing healthy stuff like quitting smoking, joining a fitness center and knowing your numbers (BP, cholesterol etc.) Then they offered us a free pedimeter that can upload our step counts to our work computers and offered to put dollars into our healthcare account (to use on deductibles and prescritions costs etc) if we started walking regularly. I respond to motivation (ch-ching) as much as the next guy so I strapped on my pedometer and started walking (doing at least 7000 steps consistently increases my points. I've already earned over $200).

I found out that regular walking is really fun.
. It gets you out in the sunshine.
. You start to notice all of the different flowers and trees you pass.
. You start to notice the songs of the birds.
. You may run into people you know and can catch up with what they are doing

Shortly after I started walking consistently the plateau broke and I got to my goal weight. Remarkably, I now walk at least at least 3 1/2 miles every single day. On the weekend I've gotten up to 10 miles once or twice. Some of my work buddies have started walking with me which makes it lots more fun, but I don't let them disrupt my daily walk if they can't make it. The pedometer keeps track of each day's steps and the sight of those tall bars on the graph on the pedometer website helps me stick to my plan of getting in at least 45 minutes every day. I'm even doing a regular "Hard Core" class at my fitness center now because my walking accomplishment has increased my confidence.

Let's be clear if you already do regular strength exercise and love your elliptical or your morning run, I'm not advocating that you stop or add more effort in the form of walking to good plan.

This blog is for all of us who love our couch and think we'd look ridiculous in a pair of gym shorts.

Get a pedometer and go for a walk.

I too really love a good brisk walk. I've made a habit of telling myself if I want to watch one of my fav t.v. programs it HAS to be while I'm on my treadmill...so far...so good! But nothing beats a great walk on the beautiful beach of SW FL. I try to do that as often as possible...hey...just because I live here full time doesn't mean I can not still play tourist here in sunny FL. emoticon emoticon

Hooray for your company for giving you guys the incentive $ to walk. But many congrats to you for staying with it and making it a part of your life. I depend on walking to keep my weight stable too. I had to break into a run to get some weight loss going though (I have some years on you). But we do what it takes, right? Proud of you!! emoticon

Walking is what I started with back in September 2011. At some point I added in at-home strength training, but it wasn't until mid-January that I moved to mostly gym activity. However, even now I track my steps - including strides at the gym and normal walking everywhere.

I honestly think it makes that bit of difference in not being as "sedentary" in the time we're not doing an official workout.

Walking really is fundamental. We are first walkers before anything else. Especially after a long, hard run or strength training, walking feels just soothing.
