On turning 60...

Saturday, May 05, 2012

There are many many milestones in life that most of reach; graduations, weddings, births of children and grand children and even great grandchildren. Then there are the age milestones; 30, 40, 50 and for me 60. Each of these milestones have different significances to each individual. The family milestones were the most important to me; my children and theirs are the joys of my life. For many people the age milestones are ones hardest to deal with; youth is so highly prized in our society and so many of us long for those younger years; holding on to them with a grip so tight and yet to no avail. We can dress young, but time moves on for us all. That brings me to the title of this blog, you see, tomorrow I turn 60. The age milestones have never been that big of a deal for me; we all, after all, age. But as I reflect on my almost 60 years, I do so with mixed review. As I mentioned my children are my joy, but along the way, through 40 years of marriage I lost myself and became someone who loved life, but didn't live it. In doing so I allowed myself to become an old man, and one who ate and ate to make himself feel good. Overweight, out of shape and miserable; going through the motions. But what seems like a sad tale of a life wasted really is a story of a life reborn. Although a marriage of 40 years sadly ended, one thing happened to this guy; he met someone who told him something very simple, but very deep and that was that "I mattered". Really? REALLY??? Over the next couple of years on my way to 60, I made changes....I started to eat better, I started to exercise and while not at my goal weight yet, I am getting there. Also along the way, I found a new best friend and am happy to say that two weeks from today that best friend will be my bride. Life is being lived!!! So no matter where you are at, which ever milestone, live it...allow yourself to experience life and always remember one very important thing... "YOU MATTER"
