Be careful what you say

Thursday, June 21, 2012

The other day I was prowling around on SP and found a comment under a poll or article or something. I don't recall the exact wording, but the idea was this: It angers me when attractive young women try to get in shape.

The exact wording was more hurtful. It bothers me that someone would be so negative on SP, especially with a remark aimed so specifically at a certain group. I know she didn't intend to hurt anyone's feelings; she was just complaining about something she views as unfair or possibly unhealthy, but I don't think it's unfair for someone like me to try to have a healthy lifestyle.

I do, however, think it's unfair that negative comments can be made about young, attractive, healthy people without repercussion, but if I ever said something like that about old, ugly, fat people, the entire SP community would come down on me in full force.

Be careful what you say. If you accidentally hurt someone, that could be their last straw - the thing that causes them to give up trying to be healthy.

I like what SDJ said there...look for the positive spin. Most people don't intend to be hurtful.

I wonder if the word "portrayed" is important here, if the writer was referring to the larger issue of the expectation that a woman isn't fit in her 20's if she isn't thin.

I don't know. Like you, I'm used to SP being all about support and encouragement, so maybe I'm just looking for a positive spin.

I found the original comment. It was posted under an article about being inefficient in order to get more physical activity.

"Oh, yes! Us silver foxes have been doing this for years - we have more stamina.
We don't need to "build" our muscles, we have adaptede to our changing bodies.
And resent the #@ii out of the portrayed nubile young women who 'have to get fit' in their twenties.
We're all in this for the duration - and not the run - we all want to feel good about ourselves so we can continue."

I suppose what bothers me is that the comment is smug.

Might have just been one of those "she only weighs 95 pounds why the heck is she trying to loose weight" things." I would never think its not great to get in shape no matter what your shape is, but some people just do not need to loose any more weight.
