#525: Goodbye Brownie

Saturday, June 30, 2012

When I last blogged in February it was to say goodbye to Little Thang, one of my kitties.

Today it is to say goodbye to Brownie, my last kitty emoticon, the second one to pass on this year and the third in two years. emoticon

Brownie and Little Thang were strays that came to the house a number of years ago, about six months before Kitty who passed on last year. All three were amazingly compatible with each other and with my dogs.

During the past week Brownie ate less and less and became lethargic. When I took him to the vet today, she said Brownie likely wouldn't make it through the day so we said goodbye, she gave the injection, and we watched and caressed Brownie as he quietly left us.

Brownie was about the friendliest cat I have ever seen; no one was a stranger to him. A couple of years ago a friend stopped by. He hadn't seen Brownie before but as soon as he sat down in the living room Brownie was on his lap, purring and doing the paw kneading thing cats do. A couple of minutes later he was asleep in my friend's lap.

One of the things Brownie loved the most was stretching out on the kitchen window ledge, especially when the window was open with a breeze blowing in.

He loved deli turkey and chicken. No matter how quiet I tried to be to trick him, he always heard the bread being unwrapped and I would hear "Meow, meow, meow," because he knew what was coming next. So as I made my sandwich I would have to pull apart a piece or two for him because his hearing couldn't be tricked.

But as much as he liked turkey and chicken, what he loved the most was being cuddled. When I was at the table Brownie would climb up, curl next to the computer and wait until I cupped his head in one of my hands so he could sleep. The problem was that he stretched his rear legs across the keyboard so I had to keep moving his legs with my free hand while trying to type one-handed at the same time. emoticon There was no way, though, that I would wake him; his head felt too warm in my hand and with his kitty motor purring, waking him would have been thoughtless.

I'll give a neighbor the cleaned out litter box and the leftover food and treats for her four kitties.

And, as before, I will notice how quiet the house is, and probably will forget Brownie is no longer with me when I call his name. Baby and Thumper, my dogs, know something is not right. They saw me leave with Brownie and then watched me come home crying without him. They haven't left my side as they offer their sympathy, sensing, I'm sure, that Brownie will no longer bless our house.

But one thing is certain -- Brownie, as with all the other pets that have shared my life over the years -- will always remain in my thoughts and in my heart. emoticon Brownie. I love you and miss you.

The tears run down my face as I remember my Iddo Cat who died almost a year ago. He too would sit with me as I wrote my blogs. He waited for me to come home from work at midnight before breathing his last. His mother abandoned him when he was just a few days old. He was the first pet that was all mine. I miss him dearly. My heart cries with yours, Lou.

I could feel the sadness in your blog (written with teardrops and smiles), but the warmth of Brownie will linger on in your heart and mind. I hope that helps bring you a little comfort.

Oh, LOU! emoticon emoticon The blog I read before going on vacation was the one about Little Thang, and now, as I get back, it's Brownie...

When Petunia goes (our 10 lb. calico who is about 13), we also won't be replacing her with another cat, and it will be a sad day when it comes. Living in a 990 sq. ft. house, the litter box is just too potent, and when she goes, it goes. emoticon

I'm so glad you still have your doggie companions, Lou... now those, I just couldn't live without. I hope you will always be able to keep at least one furry friend for loving companionship that only they can give. emoticon

awww, Brownie sounds like he was the biggest sweetie in the world! I'm so very sorry for your loss. I would like to believe that Brownie is now reunited with Little Thang and they are thoroughly enjoying their kitty heaven. You all will be reunited, in God's time.

Such a cute story about how he would lay across your computer sleeping. Thanks for sharing that with us.

    Bless your heart, Lou.

Lou, I'm so sorry you lost Brownie. Having to put pets to rest is a really sad and heartwrenching thing.
Find comfort in your dogs, as I'm sure they will in you, while you mourn the loss of your buddy.

    BTW, you should blog more.

My little buddy has a tumor and it is only a matter of time. But I wanted to allow him to live his life till the end. So he is here still ;doing remarkable well. I just keep buying his meds from the vet and he is holding his own. We lost our cat george to a snake bite this past spring and that was tough. My thoughts are with you tonight. God bless.

So sorry to hear this. I recently lost a beloved kitty of 10+ years to an abrupt, unforseen death. Literally fine one moment, gone three minutes later. (We suspect stroke or heart attack.)

It's heartbreaking to lose a loved one, even when that loved one is "just" a pet.

I am so sorry to hear about Brownie - it is so evident how much you loved that beautiful kitty. Brownie, Little Thang, Baby, Thumper and all other animals who were brought in by you are very blessed animals to have someone who truly cares about them so much. This world needs many more Lous in it!

Oh, Lou, my heart is breaking for you. As you know I have been through the same scenario the last 3 years with my beloved babies (collies).

Your description of typing one-handed was the BEST...the things we do for our babies That shows true love.

I do hope you get another...I know it will never take the place but it can help fill the void that is left in your home.

God Bless you and I will be praying for you! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm so sorry for your loss, I can sense your pain as I too have lost 2 cats over the years, my last "kitty" was a 17 year old red tabby who was diabetic, he lived for 3 years with severe diabetes having 2 insulin injections daily..In spite of all the TLC his kidney's shut down and he passed in 2006. My prayers are with you. emoticon

emoticon I am so sorry for your loss. My mom sent me the poem Rainbow Bridge when we had a beloved pet pass. If you have never read this poem, goggle Rainbow Bridge Poem. I cry every time I read it. Pets are so special and the people who love animals are also very special. Again, sorry for your loss. emoticon
