I decided to re-enter the dating pool back in March. Since then, I have had three unsuccessful attempts. My latest attempt lasted the longest, but I found myself stressing and binge eating among other unfavorable behaviors. I am starting to think dating is not for me right now, because I tend to lose myself a little. I have not been to the gym in ages. I have not been preparing my meals. I am just eating whatever, not exercising, and expecting not to gain weight.
WTF am I doing!!!
I stepped on the scale the other day, which is something I had been avoiding, and I realized that I had gained about 8 lbs since my last encounter. This gain has put me within 16lbs of my starting weight last October when I was down nearly 30 lbs.
I have got to turn this thing around a fast.
While working from home this past Monday, I watched an episode of the Dr. Oz show. I am a big fan of Dr. Oz, but I think he sometimes gives too many solutions to this whole weight loss thing. One day it may be a miracle supplement, the next a miracle diet/food, and then again this new miracle work-out.
However, this episode focused on losing weight for your body type. I have an apple shape, which means I carry most of my weight in my mid-section. Although I am big all over, my middle is my biggest problem area. According to this episode, belly fat is the most dangerous kind and also the easiest to lose. It does not respond to an low-fat diet. Instead, it responds to a low-carb diet.
I love carbs. I love bread, pasta, sweets, sodas, and the list goes on. These are the items that I really need to limit in my diet. As I reflect on the things I ate yesterday, I can say that I probably took in more carbs than protein and fat combined. So needless to say, I've got to overhaul my eating habits. It appears that eating Mediterranean style would work best for my body type. Eating this way would focus on healthy fats and complex carbs. I would need to limit my red meat and simple carb intake. That is not a big deal, well except for my sweet tooth.
Anywho, I am going for it. I am not a fan of avocado, but I am going to give it another try. I love olive oil, so that change won't affect me as much. I also love nuts and seeds which is a big part of this diet. I have to be budget conscious as well, but I have tuna in my pantry as well as salmon, tilapia, and shrimp in my freezer. Those items will definitely get me started. I will have to be vigilant about staying away from red meat, because no one enjoys a burger or juicy steak more than me.
I will spend this slow day at work meal planning for next week and planning my shopping trip. I will also head back to the gym next week as well. My daughter is with her dad for the weekend, so this will allow me to do some meal prep as well. I am really looking forward to starting again and seeing the scale and my ticker move in the right direction again.
