Back surgeon checkup visit

Sunday, August 05, 2012

Thursday was my checkup with the back surgeon and new Xrays (6 months from last visit). The Xrays look good and my fusion has filled in 100%, better than most do. I still have some pain-that may stay forever. But the bigger problem of numbness and potentially losing feeling in my legs is gone as far as the pinched nerve. So I no longer have to see the spine surgeon unless new problems develop. I do have a limit of lifting 20 lbs - more only occasionally and done very carefully if I need to. But that's it.

The bad news is that I am still using my walker because my legs are swelling so bad. We think it is heat related. But the last GP visit had my BP up because of the extra water I'm holding even with adding lasix. So we have changed my BP meds. I am very frustrated because I have gained almost 30 lbs this summer-I think most is the swelling in my legs. I am having trouble bending my legs-so walking is hard. And I am tired.

Frustration is has set in. Not sure what will happen if this doesn't resolve when fall comes. But I have been tracking my calories and know that that is okay. So hoping my weight goes down eventually.

It's been a long summer-and there's still at least a month to go. This has been even more difficult than the rehab after either surgery. Take care, Diana

emoticon Looks like you are doing well, except for the swelling. And a lot of that can be attributed to the summer heat I'll bet. Just really keep your sodium under control, and drink enough water!

    Good Luck!

I agree about the heat and the swelling. My feet have swollen more this summer than ever! Hopefully it'll get cooler soon and resolve itself for BOTH of us!! If you're keeping your food under control as best you can then you are doing better than I am -- this week has been horrendous for me! You know when you get to the point you DON"T want to track it - that you're not doing good!
