Bicycling Distance?

Ever feel like you just can't go any further? I do. I have walked a half marathon and then started to try and add on some distance to my biking for awhile. Well yesterday, I did a 40 mile bike ride, which is my longest yet. But about 26 miles in, on the way home, my thighs were killing me. I had to get off, stretch and walk a few minutes somewhat regularly to be able to keep going. Any advice on how to deal with this? When I got home I took a pain killer, had a snack and plopped on a couch with a book I had wanted to finish and my legs felt fine a few hours later and no soreness the next day. But how can I reduce this during the ride and immediately following the ride? I would like to be able to go further than that, but after yesterday, I am not sure I can. No amount of breaks is going to make that thigh pain go away, it seems.

    Congratulations on the ride. Isn't it fun to be bicycling? Earlier this summer I found a 40-mile ride to be a bit too much. We turned around at 20 miles, unfortunately at 30 miles when you are in pain, you still have to make it back those extra 10 miles. So we cut back and rode 25 to 30 mile rides regularly and now can ride 40, 50 and even one 60 mile ride. We just had to build up our muscles.
    Another trick that I find helpful is that I carry calcium pills in my bike bag. I have found some calcium gummy chewables that I can take without even stopping the bike. I heard somewhere that muscles need calcium to work and can deplete it. I don't know if its really true, but it helps me. I just chew a couple when I hit that wall. When I first started riding it happened after 45 minutes. Now I ride 2 or 3 hours before I need any.
