Paper mâché and other experiments

Thursday, September 13, 2012

So, my partner at work thought it would be a good idea to make dinosaur teeth out of paper mâché for today's art project. Well, she blew up two balloons so we could make two teeth with four kids working on each. She got right to work covering hers with the coated paper while I was trying to get the volunteer to work on the other one. Well, I had to give in and get messy. I had just started on mine when the other balloon popped. She got splattered with flour, water, paper, and balloon. I figured she just held it too tight so I kept going. It was going pretty well when suddenly it exploded. Not just popped, but exploded. I ended up with it in my hair, on my face, clothes, you get the idea. Flour and water everywhere. I was given an extra shirt since mine was pretty wet and my supervisor was worried about the flour. Luckily, the only reaction I seemed to have had is itchy hands. Lesson learned: paper mâché and two year-old's do not mix.

My last week of the wildlife sanctuary after work and I didn't even get to enjoy it. I was late getting out of work on Monday so I had to cut my visit short and haven't made it back since. Tuesday we had a staff meeting, yesterday I physically couldn't do it, and today I might have been able to do some, but had too many errands to do. Still trying to figure out if I have a bug or allergies, or a combination. Hopefully I make it for my walk tomorrow.

I finally tried the cauliflower pizza crust tonight. It has potential. It tastes good and my husband likes it (I didn't tell him what was in it), but I used Parmesan instead of shredded cheese like the recipe called for, and didn't spread it thin enough. I plan on trying it again soon.

Well, time to relax and maybe get started knitting a new pair of socks. I just need to get BOTH done before I lose anything.

I've seen the cauliflower pizza before and was wondering if it was any good.
    Hope you get better soon.

Exploding paper mâché?! Interesting. Never heard of that happening.

I am a retired preschool teacher and I laughed at your story because things like that happened to me. However, I agree because of your wheat allergy someone else should have done it. I used to work with two year olds and I really miss it.

I pray you can get in your walk today!

I have to admit I laughed at the image of them exploding. hehe Though considering you're showing an allergy to flour someone else should have done it for you. Or at least you should have worn gloves (like kitchen gloves or latex gloves).

We didn't have enough glue. That was our first choice.

For future reference: Elmer's glue and warm water is great for paper mache. No risk of the flour causing reactions and it dries faster and there is less chance of mold growth. It's still really messy, though. (I think the ratio is 2 parts glue to 1 part water, but you should never trust my memory--google it to be sure!) emoticon
