Wow, what a race. I'm soaring

Yesterday I did my first 5K. My company does one on our property every year. This year was the 15th year. It was a great race for me because it was definitely for fun and fitness but no matter how uncompetetive you feel there is something about a race that makes you step up to the challenge.
I've been working on increasing my distance and time for the last few months just so I could increase the cardio benefits so I do over 3 miles (a 5K is 3.1) every Saturday, I wasn't worried about finishing at all but I was worried about being left in the dust. Well turns out I finished in 48:47. Wow, that is almost 15 minute miles. I never thought I could move that fast for a sustained amount of time. I found that some of my friends started out running pretty fast but they couldn't keep it up and I passed them around the 2 mile mark. Right afterwards my friend and I had to get back to work so we left for our building right away.
Well, it looks like the old cliche slow and steady wins the race is really true. When I got back to my office I got an email that said that I had placed in the top 3 for my age group. I came in 2nd and got a silver metal. I don't know how many of us old coots participated and I don't care. I am walking on air today. I feel like I won the Boston Marathon!
