I have another weird animal tale or should I say tail to tell. It happened around this time of year, last year. I was walking in an area of town with a lot of very tall deciduous trees at dusk. I saw a mom and dad with two little girls who had stopped and were pointed at something behind me. All of sudden, something hit the back of my head with a great thump. Really, it was like being knocked out from behind. Lo, and behold a great barred owl had hit me on the head and sprung off and landed in a nearby tree. He was absolutely beautiful and luckily did not dig his talons into my head.
I tell you if my husband hadn't witnessed this I would have thought it was a dream. The best part is I kept thumping the back of my husband's head so he could have the same experience. He told me he would take my word for it.
After this happened I googled owl attack. Sure enough, young fledgling owls sometimes mistake people for prey. They are practicing and their aim can be off. They particularly favour girls jogging by with bouncy ponytails. They mistake the ponytails for moving mice and such.
I don't have a pony tail but I do have a lot of thick curly hair. Obviously, too tempting for that owl. I still walk in that neighborhood and don't give a hoot about that owl!
