Big Sis and Me

Monday, October 22, 2012

About a month ago I took my sister to see my personal trainer during an Open House at my gym. My trainer already knew that my sister Arlene, belonged to a very fancy club. This club has a swimming pool, gym and gorgeous changing rooms. For years, my sister has only eaten there and never used the exercise facilities.

When my trainer did a body composition test she was very alarmed at my sister's very high fat ratio compared to her lean muscle mass. She wasn't trying to drum up business she was just concerned. Instead of inspiring Arlene, this news seemed to bring her down. I am 60, and she is 65 and you lose muscle mass as you age. The problem is when you have no muscle, no strength, you are very susceptible to balance issues and breaking bones when you fall.

Arlene went through kind of a funny process. At least I have found it very amusing and have teased her no end. First, there was the doing nothing phase. Then she got herself a locker at the gym for the first time ever! Next, we had to go to the dollar store and look for plastic shelving for said locker. Then, she needed brand new running shoes. Oh and on the weekend we went shopping for a sports bra for her. "Gee, you have everything for that locker, only one thing is missing!" I quipped. She looked at me ruefully, "Yeah, I know the actual exercising part of this equation!" We had a good laugh. Well, yesterday she did her very first workout at her gym - a little bit of treadmill, followed by some biking. Hurrah!

My personal trainer said that the reason people don't start their training programs right at the beginning of January and start 3 weeks in is because of this kind of getting ready. That's right mentally they are getting the equipment together but still procrastinating. Human nature huh?

Never too late! Tell her she is ready to prevent dementia! I read yesterday an article that stated if you exercise in your 70's you prevent dementia in your 80's and 90's and beyond - by a great deal. Congrats to both of you. emoticon

GO SIS!!! She had to do it on her own time and in her own way. At least she is steadily making progress and trying to build her GUNS like yours.

Cute. and I hope to catch her soon. We will have a new ANYDAY gym opening that I hope I can afford. Not this year, but the year before I was a member of a gym, and went 4 days a week for 52 weeks. I need to strength train for my muscle mass and bones too. I will be 64 in December. As we have said before, you and I, that we still feel like 40!!! Cept don't look it haha.
