Detroit Half Marathon

Friday, October 26, 2012

Last year I registered to run the Detroit half marathon, well I didn't follow my training plan so I backed out. This year I registered again and once again was not doing what I was suppose to. I told my husband I wasn't going to do it.
On our anniversary my Husband asked me "Would you do it if I ran with you?" I was more than a little surprised since he hates running, and we only had nine weeks. So we got him some shoes and I found a 9 week training plan. Since we didn't have a lot of time we did walk/run interval on our runs longer than 3 miles.
Race day we decided to run as much as we could, and we ended up running most of it. We walked the incline to the Ambassador bridge, the incline out of the Windsor tunnel, the water stations and a couple other short walks. The last two miles were really hard for me and I was so glad he was there to push me. We had so much fun, we talked the entire time. The crowd was amazing. We were almost done and my husband said "You could probably talk me into a full marathon someday" I think he secretly loves running and won't admit it.
I knew I could finish even if I had to walk a lot of it. So my next goal was to finish in under 3 hours. (When I registered I put 2:45 for my time)
Our time ended up being 2:44:22. I was so happy with that.

From now on I plan to post the races I register for on my Sparkpage to hold me accountable.
Next half- Pittsburgh May 5, 2013

Congratulations! So happy you met your goal. I did the 5K and have to say it was inspiring to see the 1/2 marathoners and full marathoners running too. Made me think that could be ME someday!

FYI my next 5K is Thanksgiving morning, the Ann Arbor Turket Trot :)

Way to go! My first one was April 2012, and I had emergency surgery two weeks prior but still made it. My second is Nov 4, 2012, and my third is in Feb at the Disney Princess Half!

That's so cool! My DH would die before running more than 20 yds, but that's okay. What a joy to be able to do it with your DH!! I am hoping to register for an early spring 1/2 but they're hard to come by here in the northwoods and it's not in the budget to travel much. I think my best bet will be one in March in the Minneapolis area. Here's to sticking to a training plan!
