January 9 -- already having trouble keeping up with my goals

Wednesday, January 09, 2013

It's only been a week but already I've fallen short on many of my goals. However, I believe they are good goals and I just need to pick myself up and try again. If they were easy for me they wouldn't help me make the change I need to make.

I've been bad about tracking calories when I'm at work. It's too easy to run to the cafeteria and grab stuff which I have no idea how to log. I take a lunch but often I'm so stressed I just want out of the unit and the cafeteria is a legitamate escape. I've been pretty good about getting my 10,000 steps per day -- at work I've ben going well over that -- but days off I tend to want to crash and getting the steps in is a lot harder. Getting 30 minutes of actual exercise, especially strength training, has also been a no go. At work I've been getting off around 9 pm (2 hours late) because of the work load and often hurt so bad I go home and crash instead of exercise. Days off I tend to sleep in and don't get to the gym.

So how to get back on trak health and fitness goals-wise? I need to be more disciplined about eating the lunch and snacks I bring to work. If the stress is getting to me, I need to go to a quiet corner and just breathe or pray. As for exercise, I need to make going to the gym a priority on days off and after work. I would probably hurt less if I stretched out, lifted weights, and did some cardio that's easy on the joints, like the elliptical. I need to pack a gym bag and keep it in the car, take my water bottle from work and just go straight to the gym, -- no detours.

Spiritually I need to make time for reading and going to Mass. I have to sleep in on only one day I'm off and get up early enough to go to the 8 a.m. Mass during the week if I work on Sunday. I make myself go to work when I'm exhausted, I need to do the same about church.

Financially I'm doing better about spur of the moment purchasing. I need to quit buying lunch at work because that's an unnecessary expense. The overtime I'm working right now will definitely help pay down the bills and build up the savings.

It's all about balance and prioritizing and taking care of myself even when I'm tired. I'm tired because I don't work on the goals that would help me feel better. I have to make myself stick to the plan and eventually I'm going to have more energy and feel happier, and probably lose some weight in the process.

I agree--too many goals--too much pressure. I say focus on 20 mins of cardio daily minimum and healthy eating. This time around the one thing I've learned and am putting into effect is when it comes to food too much variety is the enemy. Repetition seems to work. So I've outlined a meal plan with the healthy foods I enjoy and will eat them and only them until I reach goal!

Sound advice from everyone's comments...try for one goal at a time, otherwise you
will become very frustrated and overwhelmed ! Congrats for getting all those steps

Pick one goal and work on that for 2 weeks - see if you can start making it a habit. Janet did that with soda and is not doing it with night snacking. Somehow, it's easier to focus on one thing

I agree. Pick one thing and work on that for several weeks and then add something new. Also, Spark People suggests you shoot for 10 min. a day as you work toward gaining consistency. They say that one of our easiest ways to fail is planning for so much more when don't have the groundwork going consistently. hang in there!

You have a lot going on! Sounds like you are trying to make so many changes at once. That's a lot of pressure. Do you think you might be too hard on yourself? They are great goals, I just know I'm exhausted when I have too many goals--I get immobilized by the pressure I put on myself. Grats on getting 10,000 steps a day! That's a lot of walking! Sounds like you are on a great track to getting healthier!

Instead of trying to do all of this at once try picking just one thing. For one week pick one thing to concentrate on and DO IT.. the next week add something else.. then you won't feel so overwhelmed.
