It's official, there is a god
Wednesday, January 30, 2013
Well, personally I'd say there's a few, and most of them are smiling on me.
There's the god of having fun at work. Seriously, yesterday my boss told me to cut down on the hours because I'm staying there too long! Thing is, every day I can't wait to get in and get things done, but there's so much to do that I tend to stick around much later than I'm supposed to, simply 'cos I'm on a roll. It helps that I get along with most colleagues like a house on fire and more often than not we're having a giggle.
Then there's the muso god. While I was unemployed I'd cut down on live music unless it was free. I'd seen a few gigs because I'd won tickets, but I'd also missed some I really would have liked to go to, because I couldn't really afford it. In October I broke the spell and went to a music convention over a weekend. I made up for all the ones I'd missed in the last few years and spent what could have kept a medium African village fed and clothed for a month or so but that was my celebration of the new job and a thank you to some very dear friends who'd funded the odd gig for me when I couldn't afford them myself. The drinks were on me for most of the weekend, as a thank you (and there's another god right there, the one of good friends because mine, quite frankly, rock).
But going back to the muso god, it popped up a couple of weeks ago when it inspired me to go to a show for my birthday. Seriously, if anyone's in London and can get tickets, get yourself to the Menier Chocolate Factory for Merrily We Roll Along, before it gets to the West End.
One of the best things is when two or more gods decide to get together, and so it was when the muso god and the god of rocking places to work at made each other's acquaintance and gave birth to the god of awesome win.
One of the staff perks is free admittance to some gigs held at a local venue. Last weeks I bagged Blow Monkeys on Thursday and Steve Cropper with the Animals on Saturday.
Apart from the monetary value (in excess of £100 for both), the Cropper/Animals gig was one of the best I've ever seen. So good I'm still buzzing from it, 4 days later. It was like touching history.
On the way out I picked a flyer with upcoming gigs. I hadn't seen them mentioned on the staff list but there were 5 I'd really like to see, so (on the basis of "if you don't ask you don't get") I emailed the people who deal with the venue begging/pleading/crawling to be put on the guest list. Unfortunately that wasn't possible as they were different promoters and we had no deal with them.
I resigned myself to either pay or not see them, but when I got home last night the god of lucky strikes was waiting for me. Free tickets for tonight's gig were waiting for me through another channel and here I am now waiting for it to start.
I only wish whatever gods deal with love affairs were also smiling on me, instead of laughing at me.
But hey, I have gigs and I'm still winning :-D
