Running Outside Day 2

I've been running since September. I started in the gym and worked in short intervals. My pacing is not good so I thought this was a good way to start. Plus it would eliminate some of the excuses about weather etc.

Well I worked up to my 20 minute run but was never able to complete it on the treadmill. After 4 tries I went back down to some lower intervals. I was still able to run for a period of time but never did make the 20 minutes.

Some of my accomplishments at the gym:
Ran a mile in less than 13 minutes
Ran two miles in under 30
Worked on consistency

So I have been working up to running out side for the last 3 weeks. This week was the week I started. I don't know about the other ladies out there but I have been conditioned to not be alone when it is dark outside for safety reasons. Right now it is still dark outside when I wake up at 5 to exercise. I also have a significant fear of serial killers.

So day one is a short interval walk run. The whole time I think about safety. What have I heard to stop people from attacking you. The only one that came to mind is very gross. I read somewhere that people have stopped attacked or intended rapes by smearing poo on themselves. Try running with that thought in your mind. Ugh. But I did it and there is a lot more freedom running outside versus the gym.

Day two was today. I go every other day and do yoga in between. There was another person outside riding a bike. It was a male. Every time he went by his face was in shadow. The last time he went by I thought he had a straw in his mouth. Then I thought well what if it is one of those blow dart tranquilizer things. He's on a bike he could probably just tie me to the bike and drag me off. Luckily he went right by several times with no attacks ;)

At least with my overactive imagination I keep moving.

    Hi SDeitch, hope it's alright that I comment. Great job with your jogging regimen! Sounds like it's just a matter of time before you'll be meeting your goal of 20 minutes. Your scenarios made me laugh (sorry) but it's good that you're aware of your surroundings. Best of luck with your running!

    The fears you have are normal. Another thing to think is that it's easy to use that fear as an obstacle. Although this obstacle can be be very real possibly, it's honestly a possibility at any time of day as well when you think of it. Just know your surroundings and be aware of things that are around you. As you get into a routine and you start to recognize other people who have a routine on the same trail you'll feel safer and more confident.

    Besides...a little bit of safe fear is a great way to help you get your pace built up cuz you'll want to run LOL
