Reading for Inspiration

Thursday, March 07, 2013

I recently read two books, which for me, were very helpful. The first was Fat Chance
Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease by Robert H. Lustig,M.D. The book was listed in one of the SP articles I read. The second was You Are Why You Eat by Dr. Ramani Durvasula.
I have been having trouble losing weight for years. I initially lost 40 pounds and then nothing for a couple of years. I am pretty much a vegetarian and I eat pretty healthy at meal times. I was snacking a lot in the car and I spend a lot of time in the
car. I don't eat fast food, but I do eat a lot of sweets. In Dr. Lustig's book he explains how our love for sugar is controlling us. After reading the book I stopped eating white foods almost entirely. I do occasionally have a sweet, but just 1. I also look for foods with no added sugar. Ezekial bread fits the bill and it's really good. I'm eating more food, but it's all whole food. I eat an orange rather than drink juice. I eat brown rice instead of white. For me it was a real break through. I have started to lose weight and I FEEL better. I was having trouble with uncontrollable fits of tiredness. If I sat down, I fell asleep. This is a problem if you are at work. I don't have this problem anymore. Maybe it was blood sugar problems, I don't know.
The second book looks at how out past influences why we eat and how we can change our attitudes. The key idea for me was to make my goals and use the Power of One to reach them. The PoO means that each day you do one thing to bring you closer to your goal. For weight loss it might be: Day 1 Clean out your fridge, Day 2 Clean out your cupboards, Day 3 Restock with healthy foods. It's whatever you need to do to reach your goal. I use it for not only weight loss, but also for my business. I just do one thing a day and I feel like I am making progress. Again, this works for me.
