Oh. My. Goodness. It's happened. It's really honestly happened.

Went to the mall today to do some shopping and while I was there, got it in my head that I could maybe use a new outfit, and all the stores are advertising huge sales on summer merchandise so......

First stop Laura. Oh, Laura, my store of choice, it has been with me through thick and... thick. I never shopped in their "normal size" section before. I was actually scared to! I sort of slunk in, peeking furtively at the racks, picking off an 18, holding it up, wondering if it had enough 'stretch'... I wondered if the clerks were looking at me thinking "we better politely redirect her into the Plus section?" But instead, a cheery approach, "Can i start a dressing room for you?"

OH WOW did i feel strange and out of place. And I was really nervous. Was I ready for this??? What if the 18's and XLs were still too snug? If that were to happen, would it take my positive, confident mood and send me into a tailspin of despair, wailing that I'll Obviously Be Plus Size Forever?

Well, I'll never know. Because the 18's and XL's FIT, dammit! They FIT! In fact, I even got myself into a 16-regular skirt (elastic waistband, how I love thee). Sadly, I couldn't find anything that I particularly liked enough to purchase but WOW did it feel GOOD. Felt good to leave with a "sorry, didn't find anything i like" rather than "darn, couldn't find anything that fit."

Off to Cleo. My old stomping grounds from a decade ago, for reasonably stylish office-appropriate clothes. Again, couldn't find an outfit that totally appealed to me, but again... IT ALL FIT. It F I T. It FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next stop, The Gap. Hrmmm it's not as amazing as I remember. Lots of questionably-thin knits. But hey. Maybe one of these sundresses..... yeahhh ok maybe not but the fault was in the styling. The stuff. All. Freaking. Fit.

I kind of wanted to stop by the Plus shop, where the clothing is familiar. I felt like, I was bound to find something in the Plus section that I liked -

But then I realized.... most of the stuff there... probably wouldn't fit.

It's going to be an adjustment, getting used to Normal Size Shopping again. I'm out of my comfort zone!!!! But I'm grinning from ear to ear.

Nothing like it when the "regular" clothes fit!! And it sounds like you're thinking about more than "it fits" to "do I even want to buy this!" Buy when you love it.

    Give yourself tons of kudos!

Congratulations! I'm with Pickie, though. It would be nice to have the prices shrink with the sizes.

This was the best blog post I've read in a while. It really struck a chord with me - clothes shopping has become a waking nightmare for me because of the size issues. What you just described sounds like a fantasy I hope to achieve one day.

I can't tell you how happy I am for you! I know exactly what it means to be able to fit into clothes at 'normal stores'. Way to go! And hold on to that amazing feeling!!!
