Another Set Back

Saturday, June 22, 2013

Hi all,
I have been struggling for the past year with swelling in my legs-especially the left one which has my total knee replacement. After a couple of trips to the doctor and some lasix, we seemed to get it under control when in April I noticed a new pain in my upper thigh of the left leg. AFter a trip to the GP, she suggested going to the back doctor since I hadn't seen him in a year and a half. He switched hospitals and is on the far north side of Indy-doable, but not real convenient to see him. I finally got in this week and after doing Xrays, he delivered some bad news. The area above my fusion (L-3 through S1) is now starting to deteriorate to the point of needing surgery. My original fusion and hardware looks great. This was a known risk and with my arthritis, one that I assumed would eventually happen-just not this quickly.

The doctor knows I'm not ready for another surgery yet, so suggested trying steroid injections to see if they will handle the pain. He referred me back to the old pain management guy and I 'm okay with him. Here's hoping the injections work for a while. I'm not ready for surgery.

Have a good weekend, Diana.

Hey, I'm Indy, too! I got 3 opinions (2 spine surgeons & 1 neurosurgeon) about getting surgery for all my back issues & they all said NO as I also have arthritis & surgery would speed up the progress of the arthritis & cause more pain issues. Is that what happened to you?

They said my back looked like a 90-year-old. Just turned 59 but back probs started about 15 years ago & have gotten worse & now hand & arm pain (though several reasons behind that, probably, not just spine) & hip & leg pain & of course all this causes daily headaches!

    Hi there,
I'm at my pain doc's office waiting for my ride. We share some similar issues, my friend. My pain doc just gave me the most hope I've gotten. The most helpful treatments I've had we're to break down scar tissue that is possibly my biggest invisible pain producer. He described a new procedure some 5years down the road that he thinks will make a big difference for me, he also complemented me, my effort, and my spirit--and he thinks my situation will improve.

I really needed hope--and praise didn't hurt either. I pray you get the same. I'm here for you and am on your side.
    Gentle hugs,

I'm so sorry to hear that another surgery has been recommended, and hope that you can get some relief with the injections. I don't know if it would help you, but acupuncture has really helped me manage pain. I went the first few times only to prove to myself it wouldn't work, and got a pleasant surprise.
