New way to start my day

I've been thinking of new ways to add more activity to my life. I keep walking faster and longer and that has been good but I know too that it's a good thing to change things up a little. This is a challenge for me because there are so few exercisey things I like to do.

Anyhow, I was chatting with Lynn Marie, my yoga instructor and she suggested that I start my day with a couple of sun salutations. They are a series of 12 yoga positions that I already know and enjoy doing woven into a beautiful flowing dance. This picture gives you an idea of what they are. You'll notice that in the middle you there is plank and stick that coach Nicole has offered videos about in the past. These are both excellent core and upper arm strength exercises so Lynn Marie suggested I hold each for 5 breaths instead of flowing right through them like the sun salutation suggests.

So this morning I opened my East facing bedroom blinds so I could see the sun and did a pair of salutations using the prescribed breathing and altering the plank and stick poses to 5 full yogic breaths. It felt awesome when I finished them. I plan to do 1 pair each morning this week and increase to two pairs next week, three pairs the following week etc. until I'm doing ten pairs a day. There are two other sun salutations that add in other poses, that Lynn Marie plans to show us next week that I might switch off with. I also plan to extend the time I'm holding the plank and stick poses until I have each for about 30 seconds each time.

I was thinking of how to increase my fitness program as my goal for the next 5% challenge. This will be it!
