“Non Scale Victories “ a great idea
STONECOT wrote about NSV’s (non scale victories) in a recent blog. She detailed out all of the wonderful positive changes that have happened while she has been working on getting healthy and strong. It really reminded me that often the healthy changes are very small each day but add up over time. Being able to walk fast a longer distance comes gradually but it helps the stamina. Also, I notice that I sleep better. Not waking up two or three times a night is great. Also if I sleep through the night there are no cravings for cookies to contend with. (Although there are no cookies in the house and I eat peanut butter out of the jar instead.) I do like fitting into my clothes better. It was nice today when I put on some shorts which had been TIGHT a few weeks ago and are feeling better today. There is still some more to go but better now.
During the last year I have been working on the eating issues and the choice issues and not doing much on the exercise side. I figured after losing 30-40 pounds 3 times I should try a new approach. It is not about will power but about changing some habits and replacing some foods. I have come to the realization that there are foods which cannot be in the house at all. Pasta is one, full fat cream cheese is another and flour tortillas. I just cannot stop at a small portion or eating just one. I have them when I am out and not too often. It really has helped to calm down my cravings. Chocolate is just a whole other story. Sometimes I go to the bakery and buy brownies. At least they are not in the house.
Finally I realized that I had hit a weight plateau and needed to be doing a few extra things or at least one thing each day. A longer walk in the morning and now I find I can get through the 4 miles much better. Or if I just cannot get in a long walk, do a shorter walk and a 10 minute video. Finding time for one video is not too hard. On a really gang-ho day I do two videos. I am really trying to bring in consistency and an ability to keep this up through vacations, holidays, stressful events and days I am just not motivated. So far so good.
