Hi Spark Friends,

It has been quite awhile since I did a blog. Unfortunately, I have gained 7 lbs in the last 2 months. A lot has been going on and I do tend to be an emotional eater and I really need to address this problem. I had pulled a muscle in the back of my leg in my water aerobics class, working at the max but after walking on it for a month, my ankle surgeon told me I had injured my achilles tendon and this is on the same ankle that I am to have surgery on October 9th so I am wearing a knee high boot for 3 weeks. emoticon I am starting my 3rd week and I shall see the surgeon on August 1 so we shall see how I make out at this visit. I have made up my mind NO EXCUSES!

Needless to say I was disgusted and I decided that I was not going to let this get me down.
Since I am not doing my water aerobics, I decided that I need a new plan, an alternative and I have decided to do my stretching exercises in the bed before I get up and then I sat on the side of the bed and did upper body exercises with 3 lb weights. This all took me 10 minutes so I had done 10 minutes of exercise before I even got out of the bed. YEA! I am starting slowly as I am always ready to take it on full speed ahead and right now that is not the best choice for me since the doctor does not want me on my feet anymore then I need to be.

I am going to do 3 Sparkpeople videos that are seated exercises each day and space them through the day. Exercise is where I am falling short so this needs to change. My 5% Summer Challenge started today so I am ready and willing and able (as best I can) to start the Challenge!

I just realized come August that I will be on Sparkpeople for 3 years. I have made many friends and I have gotten a lot of support. I truly value my relationships on Spark. I have not gotten very far with my weight loss but that is about to change. I am really getting tired of doing this over and over and at the same time I think that this is just ridiculous. I just need to DO IT! I will be 71 years old on August 5th so I really cannot keep putting this off now can I! I presently weigh 220 lbs and my first goal weight is 160 lbs.

First, I have not had a weight issue as a child or adult until I retired from nursing 8 years ago. As I have said before you really play around with this. Its like lets see what can I eat and still try and stay the course? I refer to it as one foot in the water and one foot out. Its like being thin most of my life, then one day you look in the mirror and still see yourself thin even though your not and then all of a sudden one day you see your reflection in a store window and you say "who is that" and low and behold "its me". Its is time to do SOMETHING! We have all been here haven't we?

So, again I have a new plan and I am going to do this one minute, one hour and one day at a time. For now while wearing the boot I am going to do the 3 Spark videos daily in a chair. I belong to the Chair Exercise Team which has many, many resources for us. It can be as little as a 10 minute video but 3 a day. I always track my food so that is not difficult for me.
I am going to stay positive and my mantra will be "you can do it". I have a saying that I keep on my desk and it goes like this "Don't Count the Day Done Until You Have Made the Day Count". Its great advice by annonymous. lol I read the Spark blogs of my friends and members who have lost weight and they are very helpful and motivating for me. I want to make sure that I do at least one thing each day to help me reach my goals and live a healthy lifestyle. I have my goals written in a journal and I am writing down what I am going to do to reach my goals. Right now my 5% weight loss goal on the Summer Challenge is 11 pounds and that is my focus. I have set myself a goal of 2 lbs a week and our challenge is for 6 weeks and I am going to reach my goal!

As far as my diet, I tend to lean toward lower carb but around 100 Grams or less a day, I am working on this too. I need to increase my veggies and fruits daily. Right now I eat about 2-3 servings and I want to increase this to 5 or more servings a day. I do eat protein at each meal so that is not an issue for me. I do not buy snacks, potato chips, ice cream or I will not stop at one serving so this is another issue that needs addressed. So I am ready to do this and I WILL reach my goal.

Thank you Spark friends for putting up with me going in circles at times, its like treading water.....around and around we go. I can do it and YOU can do it as OTHERS have done it and so can we with DETERMINATION, FOCUS, FAITH IN OURSELVES and by not getting OFF-TRACK. My Spark friends are the BEST! If we support one another we WILL reach our goals, we may all take different paths but we will get there. THANK YOU Spark friends for being there for me!

June, I'm there with you. I've gained most of my weight back too, and know that emoticon ! Just focus on losing a pound as if that's all you need to lose. When you do it, repeat it once again. A pound is less intimidating than 10 pounds. . .

Sorry to hear about your Achilles tendon, and your upcoming surgery. Yes, you are adapting your program to upper body, and maybe some gentle yoga might help, too. Getting in the water is still a good option, but maybe just some water walking, or even deep water exercise, so there is no impact. I had that same problem, and wore the boot, too. I still have it in my closet, and have put it back on a couple times when I started to notice the "twinge" returning.

I'm here if you need support, June.

emoticon emoticon You will get there, however long it takes. The chair exercises are great when you can't get walking.

Hi June! I'm sorry that you are having trouble with your Achilles tendon and hope the surgery will help solve any problems. I like your mantra and your positive thinking! emoticon
That is great that you have 10 minutes of working out under your belt before you even step out of bed!!!! emoticon The weight you put back on is only a setback, but now you are on the road to success! I put on 10 lbs at the end of last year because I just wanted to eat a little more of all of the holiday foods and wasn't as dedicated at tracking properly. But I got rid of 9 of those pounds now and am working back to my goal! You can do it too! We''ll do it together!

emoticon I hope you have a sensational birthday!! My DH's birthday is on the 8th and mine is coming up in the beginning of September. This is a great time of year to have a birthday! Celebrate with gusto!

I'm sorry about the situation with your ankle, but it sounds like you are determined to do your best with what you have. It's sooooo hard not to let injuries set us back and serve as an excuse to go off course. God knows I've done that MANY times now. So good for you for picking yourself back up and finding solutions instead of excuses!

As another retired nurse I can empathize with how that weight creeps up on you when you are no longer so busy at your job. It is slow enough that you don't see it coming. Good luck with the challenge and God bless your efforts. It sounds like you have made good friends here and that is so important. Millie

Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.

I can so relate! I slacked thru the last Challenge and will change that attitude with this challenge. I will log my food and do some sort of exercise every day. It may only be 10 minutes, but it will be something. I take meds that I need to take on an empty stomach, so I take them when I wake up. I eat breakfast an hour after I take my pills. I waste this time on the internet just surfing. I am going to do my 10 minutes during this time instead. I have found that if I start my workout, I will usually go past the 10 minutes.

Best wishes...restart, reboot, rejuvenate! As for me and most of whom I've read say its the way it's done. This journey never ends. It is continuos. Just work on those newest seven pounds. Don't own them. Then move on to the next and the next. Even when it's ALL gone there will be work to be done but it is soooo worth it. Just think how much better your ankle will be after surgery without the extra weight! emoticon emoticon emoticon

You sound like me when it comes to looking in the mirror and wondering who is that old fat women? I thought of myself as thin or in shape even when I was not. And regardless of the weight I gained I hated to hear obese. Let alone morbidly obese.
I know it's lack of exercise and not adjusting our portions that causes us to gain when we stop working. Oh and hitting 50, menopause that didn't help. Smile!!
June you know just what to do and I applaud you for doing other exercises when you can't get into the pool. I had to do that too.
In fact now with the lovely weather, those nice long walks are exzillahering.
I lay on my bed and lift weight, use the resistance bands.
With the arm in a sling for 6 weeks, not too much weight lifting , but I will find something to do.
Good luck , you can do it.
Take care. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Great to see you posting. Sorry that you're in a boot. I had to wear one for my achilles tendon for quite awhile. I hope that you heal quickly. Keep sparking... you'll reach your goals. emoticon

June, my dear friend, you are a vital and intelligent woman and I know that you can do this. I think that you are beautiful the way you are, but I know that you are not happy with the way things are. Do this for yourself and only yourself. I have a lot of faith in you.
